The old games

All right, so a friend convinced me I should play the old Diablo games to "prepare me" for D3 (which I get from Annual Pass). So, should I start with Diablo 1 or just go for Diablo 2?
Is it like Warcraft where 1 and 2 aren't necessary to play to understand Story and Gameplay, or would it be better for me to buy both 1 and 2, instead of just 2 and its expansion.

Both are pretty hard to slog through if you're used to modern games handholding. Diablo I has a pretty bare bones story, too, so you don't need to experience it in my opinion.

If you must play D2 just make a hammerdin build.

Just buy diablo 2 and its expansion. You can just read the story of diablo 1 from the internet. (this is what i did) :D
