Sometimes units just don't serve the purpose intended well enough. Sometimes they're early stage models of a final stage product. Sometimes, they're just bad ideas. The Assassin model is still in the game if you check through the custom map design program. In fact, several of the custom maps out there use the model, but Blizzard never implemented it or its accompanying stats.

The assassin eventually evolved into the Warden in Frozen Throne.

Originally, each race was intended to have six heroes; this was gradually taken down to the familiar three. The Troll Shadow Priest from TFT was intended to be an RoC hero originally. The current shaman model was originally used for an orc unit to be called the Spirit Walker, who summoned ghost units. The name was recycled for the Tauren Spirit Walker in TFT. Also, the Orc slave master from the beginning of RoC was intended as a playable hero called the Warlord.

Stuff like that might actually make a good addition to this site once it's up and running...just a thought.

From Blizzard's old War 3 section:
Though the mysterious female Assassins are not officially part of the Sentinel army, they serve the militaristic needs of Kalimdor with as much passion and precision as their moon-worshipping sisters. These dark women prefer to stay in the shadows and strike from afar. Like all Night Elf women, Archers are able to Shadowmeld at night. (that is copied verbatum - I think "Archers" is a typo on Blizzard's part)

Assassins had Blink (same as the Warden spell), Shadow Meld, and Slow Poison (believe it was an autocast - slows on hit)

This particular model was reused as the "Wardens" in Reign of Chaos in Illidan's prison. The skin was changed a little since then though. Then Blizzard went back and took the whole unit's concept and turned it into the Warden hero in Frozen Throne. She kept Blink but Slow Poison was lost. Though I think another unit/hero got that (honestly can't remember now though.. been a little bit since I played War 3). It may just be a Creep ability. The icon is definately still in the game though (it's the dart with purple ooze coming off it (http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=50&pos=881))

I believe the dryads got slow poison in RoC.

Where did you get that old War3 section info? I'd like a link please, if you have one.

Dryads and Spiders both had it.
