I was just looking at the WoW site and read this,
Long ago, before the First War, the warlock Gul'dan exiled a clan of orcs called the Frostwolves to a hidden valley deep in the heart of the Alterac Mountains.
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/mounts/alteracvalley.html

I'm just wondering how the Frostwolf Clan got to Alterac in the first place, How did they even know where Alterac was?

Is this just another screw-up on WoW's part or is there some logic behind it?

Thanks, Z

Screwup on Blizz's part.

The Frostwolves' chieftain, Durotan (Thrall's father), refused to drink Mannoroth's blood and so his clan never entered the bloodlust.

When they came into Azeroth, Gul'dan ordered them to be exiled. Thus, they traveled north until they settled in Alterac.

Blizzard doesn't screw lore as much as you think :D

I know about the reason behind them being exiled. It's just the fact that it says "...the warlock Gul'dan exiled a clan of orcs called the Frostwolves to a hidden valley deep in the heart of the Alterac Mountains."

A few things seem a bit off, first the wording makes it seem like Gul'dan sent them to Alterac Valley. I wasn't aware that he even knew what lied to the north, let alone knew of a secret valley in Alterac.

Second, How did they get there? In the intro to WCII it talks about how they had to constuct ships to carry them across the sea.

And third, Wouldn't the humans of Stromgrade, Hillsbrad, Alterac, and maybe even Lordaeron have noticed a whole clan of Orc's (a race which they had never seen at this point.) traveling though thier land?

The whole thing just doesn't seem to make sence to me.

The frostwolves are a rather small clan, and they really weren't causing anybody any harm so it's quite possible they could travel unnoticed in a pre-war enviroment, especially if they moved by night.

Also it's important to note that the orcs made an Armada because Stromgarde managed to keep Lordaeron defended by the Orc-occupied Khaz Modan. Before Khaz Modan got taken over, there was probably no reason for Stromgarde to be on the watch for invading armies, let alone a wandering clan of orcs who were probably avoiding humans.
