View Full Version : Just Imagine You're A Mage In Dalaran...

I'm just wondering... How would mages in Dalaran(before it got destroyed) actually lead a lifestyle in some magical city? Go to magic school, advance to an adept, go find a job or try to get a higher ranking and end up in the Violet Citadel as one of it's guardians? And how do they like, buy stuff for magic, like, in an Arcane Vault or something? Just imagine it being like that, I'm utterly confused and I hope someone would help "un-confuse" me here...

Well, first of all, Dalaran has normal citizenry. They run their businesses and don't have anything to do with magic.
The Kirin Tor seem to welcome any mage. After all, he would only bring more magic to Dalaran and, if he proves trustworthy, they can invite him to join them, thus getting more power between their ranks and being able to improve their knowledge.
It's a magic kingdom. Practically everything is created using magic, so, well, those new to the city aren't a supplying problem at all, less if they're mages in their own.
For the young students, I don't know how the system works. I suppose that, after they detect infants with magic potential, they speak with the parents and they make a decision.
They probably live in a communal zone (rooms separated or not) with the other students. Once someone gets powerful enough or just makes another veteran mage get interested on him, he leaves with him and becomes his apprentice. He, then, probably starts to live with his new master. That doesn't mean he'll be separated from his old comrades.
And, well, after they have finished their basic studies, if they decide to stay with the Kirin Tor as one of their members, they should be given a home for themselves at Dalaran, and a place of work among the other mages.
If he decides to leave, the Kirin Tor can always give him a letter of recommendation if he decides to join somewhere else, like the local mage of a town, or, if he wants to return home, provide some basic material for keeping his research improved. Of course, he'd always be welcomed to the city if he decides to come back.
During their free time, the students could be able to return to home to visit their parents. The Kirin Tor would give them money, whether they're studying or just working.
After all, magic is a school like any other. Dalaran could be viewed as just any real-world university city. Just change the studies of the students.

My favorite use of magic in the entire city is the Inscription Store. Go visit it, and now and then the mage sitting on the back platform will hold out her hands with magic, a random book sitting on the shelves will suddenly glow with energy and start levitating. You follow it, and you will notice that above you is a long tunnel leading up to a sky light.
The tunnel is nothing but shelves, with books, and the mage is basically returning the book to the shelf using magic. I always found it a cool concept, just having this out of reach nook with books, that you use magic to take the books or return the book to it.

I wonder how they generally treat other magic classes?

They don't like Warlocks or Necromancers, Dalaran used to have laws against using that kind of magic.
Paladins can be a little persnickety towards them, but really only in Knaak’s world. They seem to treat pallies and priests fine everywhere else, and vice versa.
They probably haven’t have much interaction with Druids and Shamans before recently. One would think they were neutral towards them. Druids probably dislike them because of their unnatural power manipulation.

That reminds me, why does dalaran allows warlocks and death knights(who are basically specialize in necromacy) to walk thre streets now?

The same reason Stormwind allows Warlocks to run around with demon death machines walking behind them, they just don't want to take the time or energy to explain something that is pretty much just a gaming convention (they are not going to exclude certain races/classes from a neutral city).

I'm not really refering to game mechanics, I'm refering to the fact that there happens to be npc death knights and warlocks in Dalaran. So lore wise it would seem Dalaran changed its position regarding necromancy and fel magic. Part of me would think its becouse of the Blood Elves and the fact that both Alliance and Horde now accept Death knights.

I think the Kirin Tor, knowing that they would need every ally they could get in the war against the Scourge and Malygos, mutually agreed with the Knights of the Ebon Blade and the death knights to allow them within the city limits.

Then of course the Warlocks get in under the 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' which has never ever bitten anyone in the ass, ever. Nope, never. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheMole)

I always assumed that Dalaran wouldn't particularly enjoy having Warlocks around, but the other day I noticed that Ambermill has plenty of Kirin Tor Warlocks.

Ssh! You're not supposed to notice that mistake!
Seriously though, I've never noticed that before. Another possible oversight by Blizzard.

As I interpreted it, Warlocks are mostly “underground”. Some know about them, but their meeting places are usually either in secretive, hidden locales or under careful supervision. You probably wouldn’t really see a Warlock just walking through town with their demon out in lore, and without handy mouse-over text or recognition of class gear sets, there’d be no way to tell if he was a lock or just a dude in a robe. Game mechanics yield to the lore in this regard.

It could be that those mages in ambermill went "rogue" after dalaran went under and began operating under their own leadership, and therefore, started using warlocks.

They're working under orders to revive that Leyline. They have Pendants designed to help with that.
