Never done this before so, here goes:

While his parents who were farmers did not particularly approve of this, they funded his travels anyway. While Mal was a rather mediocre mage compared to his peers, he could hold his own for awhile in a bout before exhausting himself. He returned to Ironforge before the sacking of Dalaran by the Scourge, and it was then he realized the necessity of melee combat when enemies are in your face.
He joined the Explorer's Guild knowing the many magical artifacts that await.
