Yeah, Demon Hunters could turn into demons before Illidan got the skull. It was a spell in WC3, Illidan casts it on us in Well of Eternity, and the DH in Darkshore uses it too.
Illidan's transformation just became permanent (and not shadowy) after he got the skull is all.
