Default We Should Build a Starship

I think we should do that.

I think if we had a starship we'd be a pretty badass planet. We're discovering new Earth-like planets every day, might as well go visit 'em.

Pool like 10% of each nation's wealth into a hat and spend those trillions of dollars on researching it and call it a day.

Please, with the amount of hot air that man produces he'd be totally unfit to be the captain.

He'd be the power source.

I was thinking more along the lines of an Admiral.

Nope. We'll call it SS EARTH FOR THE WIN!

Ron Paul can be the admiral, Newt Gingrich the project director.

You should name it Sovereign, so our tag line can be 'you exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.'

Hell in fact, make it look like a Reaper! And we'll build Geth and Collectors to protect it!

It'll be powered by the harnessed rage of the Story Forums. At those levels we'll be traveling faster than transwarp.

Well I'd support the idea with my vote if it ever happened.

But I don't see it being anything more then a cool toy. Considering that with the best propulsion system (and I am pulling this out of my ass, but it's not like I don't know anything) we have right now it would still take this ship months to get to Mars, let alone anything interesting.

What would obviously have to be done before this project is to develop radical new tech so that the ship we eventually do build is meaningful and practically useful, and there is where we hit a hitch. The nations would be distrustful with one another about this research project... So yeah, blame politics as always.

From my limited physics knowledge, the speed isn't the biggest problem it's the acceleration besides the obvious problem (money). Humans can't handle past a certain amount of G and that's where it gets tricky. Theoretically we can handle any speed whatsoever, even 100 times the speed of light, it just matters how fast we get there.

And then you have the question of how to avoid asteroids and all. And then radiation?

So far I think the fastest thing we've built is somewhere in the area of Mach 30-40.

I always figured that the biggest problem would be the distance. We'd need an incredible amount of speed to cross that distance in one human life span (it'd still take a fucking long time if you had multiple generations).

As far as I understand my physics G force shouldn't be an issue in space, and the spaceship would obviously never take off from earth surface but would be built in space.

We aren't ready to be spreading our stupidity to other planets yet.
