I think there's a difference between changing your mind because you've genuinely adopted a new stance on an issue, and simply taking a new stance because it's politically expedient.

Most voters want to have some degree of assurance that the officials they elect are going to remain somewhat politically consistent in office.

Regardless of his moral standing, Ron Paul is the world's largest conservative in that the man absolutely hates any form of change. That's the definition of conservativism.
