The problem isn't that these guys wanted to use the same formula over and over, it's that they have to sell this to executives. So the following happens...
  • Original creator of the series pitches show, it's received well enough that execs in charge of creative programming (new content) say "let's work on this."
  • Execs (being who they are) try to push boundaries while still staying within the FCC limits. What this means is they use the word "edgy" to describe something that still has to follow network (pg-13) rules.
  • The show bible, plot, characterization, & etc. get thrown up and down the creative ladder (from original creator all the way up to execs and back) until everyone is satisfied the show can be sold. This basically creates the generic L&O product standards we constantly see on tv.
    • If the show is still not good enough they add in one of three things to fill in the gaps: Laugh track (comedy), sexy (action or romance), or excessive music (drama).
  • The show is produced without seeing the forest for the trees, essentially neutering it at birth. In order to spice things up they take as many up and coming (or resurrected) stars as possible and shove them into the show to bring in their audience.
  • The execs celebrate when bored Americans tune in out of sheer lack of options, giving them false positives on their quality control. Seeing the formula work once again, they congratulate themselves and turn around to create new content that's just as "edgy" as their current crop.
Overall what you see isn't the product of one person's stupid fantasy, but 20 different creative influences all fighting to take the helm. Thus when compromise occurs to create the production, it basically results in creative abortions that people accept due to the fact they're so used to them they've become completely numb.

Fiona as a cop, and Hulk looking for a date. This should be interesting. Honestly every show on tv sucks now. They even raped Spartacus... All that is left are hospital dramas. I still don't get why people watch those.

The Original Catherine Chandler was as lawyer, who became a District Attorney.

Yes, but it’s the executives who are so tremendously afraid of deviating from established formulas that cause network tv to be utterly devoid of anything original or worthwhile. They can only think derivatively, and they‘d rather suck every ounce of Nielson out of an established concept than try and innovate because they are mind-numbingly risk averse. Old people love “NCIS,” etc., so cloning it with the most minute differences makes the most sense to them.

Don’t worry, I foresee Sherlock getting canned fast. Beauty and the Beast however might run for a while, since the CW has pitifully low standards.

I want to watch the BBC series of Sherlock Holmes because it's supposed to be really good, but recently I heard an important spoiler from one of the episodes. So everytime I think about watching it I'm reminded of the spoiler, so now I'm trying to wait until everything I know about the series has been forgotten and then try to watch it.

Good luck with that. Every time I have something major about a series spoiled by me, I go through the whole show/movie/game/book thinking 'this is great, but I wonder how it relates to THAT DAMN SPOILER.'

And that's why I love spoilers; except for Doctor Who and Sherlock, because they have key elements that affect the plot too deeply. I'd give examples, but I don't want to considering it could make the "WHAT THE FUCK DID JUST HAPPEN" be less epic for new viewers.

I don't understand the complaints no one is forcing you to watch this show. Just ignore it and get on with your life.

This is why I never actually watch TV anymore.

If I want to watch a show, I just download it off of TPB. There's too much shit to wade through otherwise.

Complaining about complaints?

You must be new here.

That actually happened to me when I saw The Dark Knight. Accidentally stumbled upon a spoiler on the Super Hero Hype comments and someone flat out said that Batman's love interest dies.

Though that didn't kill the movie for me, but it nagged at me a bit...

Because it would confuse the rednecks. "Uh... Sea-attle? Is that some kind of toy?"

Because Toronto looks more like New York or Chicago than Seattle of Phoenix.

They use Vancouver for Seattle though.

I'm just gonna put this out there:

the one thing that would make me watch this show would be regular guest appearances by Detective John Munch.
