Default How many more expansions?

Simple pool for you to play in. How many more expansions after WoD does WoW have left?

Feel free to elaborate your reasoning.

My opinion? Two more, three at best. The game is old, the competition is finally catching up for real and... well the game is real old, the recipe is worn out, there are only so many ways you can polish it, the end is drawing near (jokes aside, it has to end sometime). And maybe I am crazy but maybe after it ends we can get WCIV, let it end and let it come

Three feels like a good number. I do think they'll continue to make them for quite a while, so long as it continues to make them a profit. And probably make more microtransactions. I think its more likely that they'll switch to a freemium model like SWTOR or others before too long and we'll see the milking really begin in earnest.

So, three. Keep it at about a year and a half between (still don't think they'll get to their whole "annual expansion" thing, they've always been chasing it) and that's close to five more years of expansions.

Until the MMO begins to return less than its investment.

Considering how much they put out and the price it was sold at, I voted for 5+.

WoW will continue to make profit hand over fist even at a fracture of the current subscriber base. The playerbase will never get so small that it won't be a huge moneymaker, it's a thing of impossibility with the amount of people reached across different generations.

They might "reboot" with a new engine sometime down the line though. Not necessarily lorewise.

This.

And I'm sceptical about a new engine/WoW 2.0 to be honest, I think if/when it gets to the stage they don't want to support the game anymore, they'll simply stop providing major content patches/expansions, downsize the team massively to only provide small bug fixes, and work on whatever.

They could simply split the Devs up and send them to other teams (Overwatch will likely be a massive success, I'm wagering, so there will be demand for more Devs, art especially) or go the WarCraft 4 route.

When this all happens is anyones guess, but I can't see any major changes for AT LEAST 5 years.

The thing with WoW is, it's such a huge brand name... they can switch to a B2P/F2P method and more than likely get back to twelve million (if not more) in the span of about a year. The one thing that's hurting their numbers now is the subscription. That's it. You take that away somehow (or at least make it optional) and we all know most people will come flooding back.

If they DON'T however? Eh, two maybe? Then we'll start seeing more 'digital expansions' akin to SWTOR where they're more or less glorified DLC with a new raid or dungeon every half a year.

Let's face it, they've been investing ludicrous amount on it since pretty much WotLK. They'll either keep squeezing it, or leave it altogether to move the developers to somewhere more profitable.

With the money it produces, the quality is far from fair. It's just a money machine, and will die as one. The focus now are low-cost micro-transaction-heavy games.

Is anyone really surprised they scrapped Titan to make a hat-simulator FPS?

I'm not. Expect a future of F2P extravaganza, and forget about the likes of W4 for a long time, unless they find a way to monetize them as shamelessly as the rest.

12 Million more expansions so blizzard could get back to those 12 million subs.

A man can dream... The ride never ends.

Haha, you know I should have split the 5+ poll option into 5+ (because I love the game) and 5+(because I am that cynical). Would make the info gained from this poll waaay more meaningful.

I'm pretty sure the first option would still get zero hits.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't mind five plus expansions.

It's hardly gonna make the situation worse

(On a more serious note, my expectation of five plus expansions stems less from cynicism and more from estimation of intent. Unless the game is divorced from the expansion system entirely, the production of expansions will remain profitable for very long)

They've said before they'll make expansions as long as people buy them, so it depends more so on fan reaction in the future than Blizzard themselves for how many we'll get.

Legion will probably be a good indicator of the future of WoW when we see player response once its out and being purchased.

Given the low subscriber base, I'm not sure if WoW can sustain a whole lot more.
