Default Overwatch lore post

https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/blog/20130523

Biggest takeaways for me are what the fuck an "Omnium" is; it's a factory that builds Omnics, which were named after the Omnica corporation, and that there was another member of the original overwatch; In addition to Torbjorn, Soldier: 76, Reinhardt, Reaper and Pharah's mom there was someone named "Liao" in the group.

My bets are Liao is probably a more archetypal Chinese hero, since Mei got some flack for not being 'chinese' enough according to Tvtropes (from Chinese players apparently)

It's also a good little story since it shows that the Omnic Crisis seems to have been caused (at least according to public knowledge) due to Omnics attacking for no reason after Omnika was shut down for the Omniums falling apart and considerable fraud.

My guess is the God Programs aren't common knowledge, and that when the Omniums were shut down they went rogue, some crazy due to disrepair but all of them upset at the attempted decommissioning.

Also seems like Omnics weren't meant to be self-aware, or at least weren't initially. Seems they were supposed to be like... highly adaptive "Siri's" lights and clockwork, no one seems to have WANTED 'robot people', and so that's why it's harder for countries to accept Omnics now that they're self aware.

Makes me wonder which countries are more or less friendly to Omnics?

Judging by the Omnic director in Hollywood and the "Omnics Welcome" sign on Route 66, Omnics seem at least somewhat accepted there, but Britain seems schizophrenic with the statue of Mondatta but Omnics kept underground.

Russia is clearly Anti-Omnic... whereas Numbani is pro-Omnic.

Not sure where japan falls.

I seriously cannot think of a realistic scenario where Japan would be anti-robot. Even an apocalyptic robot war wouldn't prevent them from fucking their waifu-bots.

I am interested in the story for this game but you guys seem to have a lot more material that I have seen. Besides the videos and this article what have they released?

The comics, a few articles on the site, the hero writeups on the site and some in-game conversations. It's actually pretty amazing how deep the lore is when it's so piecemeal and there aren't that many sources.

I think some of these theories would make you sad.

Like the theory Mercy is not fully alive because she checks her pulse and then shakes her head 'no' and Mei notices she didn't age.

I thought Mei was Overwatch though?

I think she was, but I think she was one of the rank and file people rather than a big name, like Tracer was when she was a test pilot before the accelerator.

Overwatch seemingly had lots of 'normal' people to help build, maintain, and run things aside from the major 'agents'.

Mei was a member of Overwatch's environmental research team. Overwatch had their hands in a lot of things.

Japan seems okay of Omnics, considering they use them as bodyguards (such as that sweet kabuki mask omnic from the Hanzo short).

I dunno if you can use a criminal enterprise as evidence for greater acceptance in society. That's like saying "Black people don't have it bad in America, look at how many black criminals there are!" If anything, the fact that the only Japanese omnic we've seen is a yakuza bodyguard paints a dim picture of their place in society.

Is Symmetra supposed to be an evil character? She works for a corporation that screwed over Lucio. Blizzard didn't seem to put any ambiguity here.

Her comic I think makes it pretty straightforward.

At this point I feel pretty awkward about the games lore. Things are, again, really off the cuff it seems with them making stuff up as they introduce heroes rather than planning things out. Nothing is going to progress story wise and with the cancellation of the comics, it seems they aren't even willing to commit to basic historical events lore. It's maybe for the best, I don't want them retconning things every time they make up a new character in this state. None of this really matters though in the scope of the game.

This is why we need a PVE mode, like that Halloween event.

That depends on what you mean by "evil." I've met quite a few who enjoy pushing people's buttons, but even they have a psychopathy score of 0 because they lack the desire to dominate others.

In the autistic mindset, people simply are. They can be made to react in various ways, but their opinions and agendas aren't subject to change -- and once an authority figure has spoken, debate is over.

How evil can you go with that?

I'd believe it. I mean if you really think about it with Blizzards quality of writing it'll essentially be:

Good Guys: IM DOING THE RIGHT THING
Bad Guys: IM DOING THE RIGHT THING
Actual Good Guys: I'm doing the interesting/important things that happen to be right

Which means Orcacron is technically correct.
