Default New Hero Orisa Announced

https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/blog/20594520

First off, I was not expecting a bull centaur...

Her graviton charge ability is like a moving Zarya graviton surge that blows up... sounds awkward given that it slows nearby enemies it passes and pulls them when it detonates.

Shes clearly a hybrid, but it feels like shes more tanky given her low mobility and active loss of speed when firing combined with a barrier ability.

Her ultimate is a team damage buff, where she... get this... throws an African drum. So I suppose shes like a support tank debuffer buffer.

Her barrier is like Bastions old barrier that she can place pretty much like Mei's icewall. Sounds like theres going to be a lot of bitching about Torb turrets and Bastion in the future.

Mechanically speaking it seems the whole shtick is slowing things down, slowing herself down, slowing down opponents. People bitch about Mei, this might be worse. I'm not sure slow and low mobility slowing others is the most attractive thing in terms of fun.

She's an Omnic, or well not really, I guess they are using the term "Drone". The OR15s were Omnic design apparently. They mention her personally but there is absolutely no sense of personality yet, she even (and this is still pretty early to say) feels serious without the kid present lacking personality more than bastion despite talking. I'm likely jumping to conclusions given that she has like 2 lines in her own trailer. Given that the kid is not controlling it either it comes off as sort of dry. That combined with the voice which, atleast to me sounds so damned similar to others just with a robot filter. Kind of a shame they didn't have the perky kid talking through a speaker or something.

Also Doomfist pretty much confirmed as the next hero given his confirmed assault on Numbani. This hero is sort of a throwaway, it's there just for Doomfist's introduction. It's background story is about Doomfist, it's entire reason to exist is about Doomfist and it's tied to a single map... about Doomfist, designed to defend against Doomfist made out of stuff Doomfist kicked the ass of. My point being Doomfist, Doomfist, Doomfist. It's sort of awkward given that it's like... a brand new entity in the world created by a kid with no history. I guess it's something different, still feels weird. I can't imagine why this thing would be going to other places given that it says it's primary function is to keep Numbani safe, but I suppose there is no cannon or story really to the gameplay. It being a hero even feels weird, it's slapped together by an 11 year old made out of the scraps of robots that were completely and totally useless against Doomfist, if this thing is so cool and useful why not make more by upgrading all the Or15s.

I really dislike that we have such a large roster of cool concept art and heroes that are shown in videos or art and we get something totally outside all that.

She's...alright. I like they're adding more omnics to the game, but she doesn't really have anything about her that really catches my interest. I don't dislike her, she's just sort of...there.

On the upside, Doomfist is very, very likely the next character.

I actually think it's really cool, and Efi mentions she gave her a heart but still has a lot to learn, so it seems like Orisa's going to be another way to explore AI's developing personality and becoming individuals.

Shadow Orb

Not a fan of the design, but skins could make it better.

Her design reminds me a lot of an elephant, actually.

I assume she's named after the Yoruba guardian spirits, but I thought they were pronounced "orisha?"

Also interesting that numbani is confirmed to be in Nigeria.

I like that the trailer has a Big Hero 6 reference.

I think I prefer the Protector and Carbon Fiber skins, the OR15 units looked way more badass before the kid africa'd it up. The "don't cross" emote is kind of cute, I can see it being fun to use in game. The kicking dirt one feels a bit off, given that this bull centaur doesn't have a charge or the ability to move fast and infact has the opposite.

I do like the eye clicks and their emotes in a mechanical sense. No real voicelines to show she has any sort of identity, the only voiceline is "I'm simply following my programming". The kid who is basically in no way relevant to the game is almost more interesting than she is, which is obvious since shes present in a third of her sprays and like, all of the hype posts leading up to this, and her entire announcement video. I didn't think I'd say this... but I kinda wish we got the kid. Releasing her on the PTR without any voicelines was a mistake, she's like a total void in terms of interesting qualities, personality or purpose... which I suppose is why all Omnics need to be blown up. Even when they add them later the first impression has been made, although I'm not sure how she can have an interesting personality going forward. I dunno it's hard to be excited when theres nothing to be excited about. Oh well, ONE PUNNNNNCHing her on Doomfist will be highly enjoyable from a meta lore perspective, which lets face it, is the only reason this hero exists. Well that and apparently to prove they can make a female character that doesn't have the body of a young pornstar according to Jeff.

I wonder if Orisa is a redesign of the red robot (the far right in this picture) seen in some early concept art. He's got what look like tribal or African markings on his shoulders.

No, he's a wrestler or something like that. He has a poster at the King's Row theater.

I'm kinda convinced at this point that 90% of Metzens anxiety is just from the people around him at work.

Yeah I always got more of a luchador vibe from him, given that we already have two Mexican characters I don't see him being a thing. I've never noticed that poster before, I generally don't miss details like that, I'll need to go look next time I'm in that map. See even he is more interesting than Orisa.

I think you would class Reaper as American despite his Mexican heritage and is likely there to represent Hispanics in America as opposed to Mexicans (which Sombra covers). Another Mexican hero who is more stereotypical wouldn't be out of place.

Argent Dawn

To each their own, but Orisa only being a month old, learning how to live, and whose purpose is to protect against threats like Doomfist while looking like a water buffalo centaur is a bit more interesting to me than a robot that has triangular pattern and is maybe a Mexican wrestler.

Also, "Africa'd it up?" "-1 Africa?" Gross.

Hey man, I'm not the one who covered the design in stereotypical African stuff you can get at a pier 1. That's exactly what she did. I've got no issue with the African little girl, I just think it throwing a god damned Djembe as her ult is a little ridiculous. But I suppose it's on par with the other heros needing to be massive stereotypes.

I'd have made the exact same statement and wording if the little girl was Canadian and made a red and white moose robot on skates in a mountie outfit who jersied the enemy for their ult. Africa doesn't change that she decorated it in the way of her culture and city.

Having a r before the s triggers me.

What's the point of the girl then? Was hoping for a remote controlled robot with a kid's voice.

1. You say this is stereotypical but I feel thats unfair, she's got personality while the other 0r15s were more plain, I feel its not a question of quality but of taste, and your wording strikes me as odd

Of course it looks African, its an African bot, Lucio looks like a dj and mccree looks like a cowboy

2. Thats unfair, its ptr, plenty of time to get personality, launch is what will decide that

She's the Hiro to Orisa's Baymax.

She really should be in highlight intros and emotes, though.

So strange that pokemon was one of the best animes last year and quickly turned to the worst in just one day.

The power of bad writing really has no bounds.
