According to a Diablo II developer, for a brief time, the mmo Blizzard was working on in the early 2000s was going to be based off Diablo and not Warcraft. |

Very interesting, although they quickly changed their view.

One thing you must remember is that I think there have been at least two "Diablo III"s. The one made by Blizzard North that was wholly scrapped and the one that came out, at least. The one being made by Blizzard North may have had more MMO architecture, but it must be made clear that the game we have today never started as a MMO.

Certainly interesting at least. Wonder how things would have been different had it not been scraped.

Except that the world would be base on Sanctuary and much more darker, the difference wouldn't be that great, imo.
Remember, a lot of the early work on WoW was based on Diablo II, as you can see in old preview videos and alpha pictures. You could actually tell that Diablo still influences WoW, since the new skill system is very similar to the one use in Diablo III. |

And some to Diablo 3 as well. Looking at the warrior changes, they are going with something that seems similar to the barbarian.

If the game was similar to WoW i am not to sure many Diablo fans would have followed it from Diablo 2 but honestly it was one of the first extremely popular MMO's (as WoW) so you never know.

Is there actually any non-confidential information on why Blizzard decided to ax Blizzard North's original vision for D3 or what that vision was? I am curious as to how D3 would have turned out under Blizzard North, especially in retrospect of D3's disappointment.

There was actually a Diablo II expansion trademark that was never used back in 2003-ish.
Diablo II: Salvation The trademark was filed on March 11, 2003. Blizzard North co-founders resigned on June 30, 2003. ![]() Last edited by Medievaldragon : 08-20-2012 at 09:07 AM. |
