Johns is mediocre and ham-handed at times. Johns once tried to replace Aquaman with a clone named Artie Joe. He's good at world building. I enjoy the lore he put behind Green Lantern.

As for DC, Greg pak put in the line about the latina scientist questioning whether Jimmy Olson was a racist. However I did enjoy the rest of the book and story arc.

I'm going to go with Mutter on this one (though not for the same reasons, probably); I read that panel and it didn't raise any red flags to me. I interpreted it as a very pointed & specific statement to that lady in particular; for whatever reason (in the comics), that lady shouldn't feel the need to apologize for slapping a man. I didn't feel that should apply to anyone else, ever; it is, of course, objectively a bad way to do things.

No PJ! We can't exercise the privilege until we're sure they're not looking! How else can we get away with it?!

It's not about truth, it's about NOISE.
It's not about compromises and solutions, because those don't generate NOISE like camping on positions and causing a government shutdown does.

Famine is still a massive problem in the Third World, but it doesn't generate NOISE like a child-soldier-using warlord does, even if the body count is a fraction of hunger's.

Even television shows are all about who can generate the most NOISE, be it via reality shows, sitcoms or well, yes, TV journalism. Hell, every commercial release is spinning around hype more than actual quality.

I should say it's frightening, but I gotta admit it's fascinating how the Internet has shown how we deal with information overflow - like animals focusing on the biggest, loudest noise at the exclusion of the silent predator hiding in the bushes.
QFT... This is just what's so frightening to me about the world today. How much 'noise' you can generate, how much publicity you can get/buy/steal, determines everything it seems.

Modern society rewards arrogance and shamelessness.

Though this has always been the case, to one degree or another. It's merely a bit more aggressive, nowadays.

Gah! Then just stick to reading XKCD or something like that... At least then you'll be a better scientist/engineer. xD

How do we fight back? By what mechanism do we stem this societal tide?

Not sure if there's a way. Maybe just wait for it to burn out, though there will probably be a lot of collateral damage.

Is there even something to find against? After all it IS just an expression of our natural instincts (focus on the big noises, because those tend to be important more often than the small ones).

Further, those are USEFUL to a point. That's one of the reasons the human brain has an upper hand on AIs - while our programming is a little wonky and buggy, it's capable of leaps of logic and shortcuts that would never be natural to a computer.

Actually shutting down those instincts could have sizable effects beyond the main objective, and even then I don't see that happening outside of an extremely rigorous mental reprogramming not that far from actual indoctrination, opening ANOTHER can of potentially horrible worms.

Maybe the solution lies on the opposite path of Chaos, to accept and tolerate these instincts and hope that we can either spot our own blind spots or at least ride them out to an acceptable solution.

Or maybe the solution is simply to break the limit that forces us to rely on instincts, i.e. to be able to treat all the information without suffering from overload. But then we're talking about either a) indoctrination again, or b) artifical improvement to the human mental capabilities (like MMI'ed data processing or, more realisticly, insanely advanced AI algorithms)

I'm more of a mind of teaching AIs how to "pre-digest" information better and more in line with our desires, in order to minimize the heavy-duty data-gathering aspect of the information overflow.

But which is most important? The you in the mirror, the you in the soul, or the you in the eyes of the Universe around you?

And even then, important to who or what?

(Like I say, stop feeding me lines, dammit!)
