Which, in a way, means you won't need a peg leg.

Or is that too far in the direction of dark comedy? I can never tell.

Well, I suspect everyone's got some baseline knowledge of diabetes and its effects, even if they don't know the particulars.

No worries, I'm not that easy to offend.

Yeah, I sort of felt bad after my post.

Not saying I'm against healthcare, just not sure it should be called a right.
This is fascinating that you have given me the words for my primary issue with the whole concept of "liberty". That fundamental difference I too have yet to see a resolution for.

When charity is coerced, it ceases to be charity.

Well, it's not as though either of us straight up said "Hah! You're at a heightened risk of losing a foot or leg!", for what it's worth.

Edit: See, even saying that in quotation marks feels wrong.

Thanks, but I can't take credit for it. The idea comes from Isaiah Berlin's lecture: Two Concepts of Liberty.

The US is mostly founded on negative liberties, which (IMO) are more easily understood and fulfilled. Berlin did not oppose positive liberties in any sense; rather, he just recognized the tension between the two.

Regarding charity, a strictly consequentialist viewpoint would argue that it doesn't matter, since the obvious endpoint of charity (support for the destitute) is still met. Others might argue that the motivation matters, or that government charities can foster dependence and be done for self-serving reasons.

I do not object to welfare in and of itself, and think it provides an important safety net. I'm not familiar enough with the state of welfare in the US to comment more.

EDIT: Aannnddd I screwed up big time and confused liberties with rights. I was talking about positive and negative rights, not positive and negative liberties (which is related to but separate from Isaiah Berlin). My bad. Sorry, it's been a while since grad school.

A lot of people that advocate for more power to regulate commerce are megalomaniacs though. They don't put checks and balances against that power because they like to put it under the executive branch out of reach of congress. It just ends up being abused. I wouldn't mind if the states offered social welfare.

I think welfare should exist to end the need for its own existence. Welfare should slowly drive down the applicants for welfare over time because they rised up into self-sufficiency. A successful designed welfare system should have its cost drop over time and not rise exponentially. Welfare should act like a trampoline instead of a trap. I feel like many times this has missed the mark. I think a lot of it has to do systemically with the federal government which is why I would rather see that social welfare role handed down to the states. It allows more accountability and opportunity for experimentation.

What's wrong with saying "fan"?

Also Rubio is awesome, don't be hatin' I find the robot thing hilarious because it's so pathetic how quick the Democrats tried to seize on that. Must be *awfully* nervous

I've only seen us, comedians, and Republicans cling to the robot thing.

Democrats (specifically one of the PACs, I think one of Hillary's?) have been dressing up as cardboard robots and "protesting" most of his rallies. I've also seen a stupid number of columns by notoriously liberal journalists blasting him on it.

As an American cyborg, I think the American left needs to examine its biological privilege.

Kinda assumed those robots were Christie or Trump followers.

Robot builders are overprivileged white bigots who build their machines using white colored materials and strip them of cyber genitals, a symbolic gesture meant to represent the slave master taking the only freedom of his property, the means of reproduction.

A lot of Trump supporters are former Democrats and independents. I wonder how that will impact his chances in states with closed primaries where only registered Republicans can vote. Iowa was a closed primary and the polls had him way over what he actually ended up with. New Hampshire was open and he won there and South Carolina is also open. There are a lot more closed primaries coming up and he may not do as well there.
