Draenei are really just classic demons with a different paint job and tentacles.

Eredar are classic demons. Draenei are just space-elves it seems.

More specifically, they were likely inspired from the Tieffling in DnD.

Is it time for me to come back to this crawl of an expansion yet? Is this patch the last patch?

Not the last patch since we are going to Argus in 7.3
Raid opens up Tuesday the 20th.
The Chromie scenario is actually very fun and a lot of people are enjoying that. Im finding the changes to mythic much better, No need to rush through the dungeon to try and 3 chest it, its actually more difficult and better to go through with a plan instead of speed runs. So it really depends on what you actually do in game to justify if coming back is worth it.

There's Argus on 7.3 at least, maybe a 7.4 too we haven't heard either way on that front.

When did you leave? if you left before 7.1 I'd come back now, 7.1 + Deaths of Chromie, + Tomb opening Tuesday if you're into that is a good amount of content.

There's a chicken vs. egg component to this, since the uncorrupted draenei were revealed as the Alliance expansion race in 2005, but tieflings didn't become a PHB racial option until 4th Edition D&D in 2008. Tieflings as a concept existed long before that point, but the notion of heroic demons feels like something that Blizzard pioneered in popular culture.

Blizz didn't pioneer it, and if anything they're a little behind the curve even today. Joss Whedon's Buffyverse was probably the first pop-culture reference and use of objectively good Demons, and he was following in the footsteps of other Sci-Fi and Fantasy writers who had given credence to the ideas built all the way back to ancient myth (e.g. Fae and Djinn being mischievous and selfish, but not necessarily evil).

Well, it really depends on what we mean by demon. I'm sure that most supernatural beings have been maligned at one point or another, but I don't think that fae, djinn or pagan gods are the type of demon that MisterCrow is talking about.

I'd even go further and say that Blizzard is kinda addicted to their trope of making demons look good, heroic and benevolent.

Yup, they want to Shamalan things, put twists in instead of creating an organic universe where everything is relative.

Guess there's not that many ways to do anthro elephant people but I find it amusing how that almost looks exactly like the elephant people in FF14's new expac.

@MisterCrow - I was talking only from an esthetical and design point of view, comparing eredar to tieffling on the surface. As for "good demons", the concept isn't new (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph.../AscendedDemon) though draenei wouldn't exactly qualify. Hellboy sort of comes to mind.

It's probably something that represents a greater turn in late-90s popular culture of "traditionally evil things being made into protagonists" as exemplified by the OG White Wolf World of Darkness RPGs. Granted, those tugged more on the notion of those protagonists as morally grey antiheroes to a large extent, whereas the draenei are morally pure and heroic in demeanor while having traditionally demonic features.

It's a fair assessment. Ultimately, I think it all comes down to creators seeing ideas and trends in the media they consume and finding similar ways of implementing them in their own spaces. It strikes me more as an organic process rather than any kind "oh man these guys got the idea from HERE."

I totally agree in general, in this specific case regarding the eredar though they literally went from a Broken appearance in the RTS to the demonic Eredar that almost exactly like the Tieffling from D&D. Not just a coincidence.

By the way, I much prefer how the draenei is depicted in the pic above. They resemble way too much cute, blue humans. I'm just going to assume that the older they get the more they change, specially their horns and tail.

So no 11 weeks long gated quest chain consisting of minor tasks such as killing 10 demons or looting 3 mobs ?

It felt more like a least measure really after things deviated, their last solution to a problem that occured internally. I don't think there was a lesson to learn, Insurrection - literally the previous patch - was perfectly fine for example. So all we can hope for is that they don't encounter similar issues, though I doubt this'll happen.

I hope the reason we got that horrid excuse for a "campaign" is that the story and quest department was focused almost entirely on Argus content...
