Meh. I found Superman/Batman: Apocalypse entertaining in the "Supergirl is hot and there's a battle every 5 minutes" sort of way, but it struck me as being overly designed to appeal to pre-adolescent teenage boys and I didn't like how casually the superheroes were willing to kill their enemies on Darkseid.

Anyway, I think my favorite DC animated movie might be Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. Good story, strong characterizations, appealing animation, and two epic showdowns with the Joker in the past and present.

Every robin with the exception of Dick Grayson and possibly Jason Todd is useless.

MotP is a goddamn classic. I thought that goes without saying.

And that Joker laugh at the end...

He became Joker's host, I guess Teen Titans is the right show for him.

Tim Drake became the host. Grayson became Nightwing. Todd became Red Hood.

I guess Drake turned into Red Robin, but I don't know a bunch about that one.

The Robin in TT was Dick Grayson. Same with S1 of YJ.

Ohh, and by the by? Fuck Luke Skywalker. The Joker is the role that Hammil deserves to be immortalized for.

His Joker laugh not just sounds great - he is cool in live too. I still hope that Mark will be cast as old Joker for some futute TDKR film adaptation.

Or maybe a Batman Beyond movie...

I've said it before and will say it again, Damian Wayne is the most interesting the character of “Robin” has ever been. Any of the others only really became compelling in their post-Robin incarnations. Hell, Jason as Robin was so useless that the fans actually voted to have him killed.

Not by intention, certainly. Sometimes it was the movie was bad or sometimes just because something was ridiculous (jetpack Batman).

The art style didn't help. Batman's lips...

What do you think about Batman VS Dracula? I remember some early work got a similar but more logical story, let batman became a vampire to get the power to defeat Dracula.

Batman seriously looks like Lex Luthor with those exposed lips.

It was an obvious call back to when Batmans major villain WAS a vampire pre-joker. Good movie, but I wasn't actually a fan of the batman show.

I loved BTAS. The DCAU in general is probably my favorite non comics interpretation of the DC universe. Hell, some parts of it are even better than the comics (or at least more consistent).

I still can't believe you're not watching Young Justice. For my money, it blows away the old Justice League series and is better than most of the comics that its source material originated in. It made me care about their versions of characters like Sportsmaster, Ms. Martian, Superboy, Kid Flash, and others - something I wouldn’t have thought possible.

As a person who's actually a fan of The Crow film, can anyone suggest me any other good superhero stories that have grit and an edge of darkness to them? Not looking for something like Watchmen per se, but a movie that has great gothic scenery and a powerful story. (Feels like I'm asking for Tim Burton's Batman, but I wonder if anymore similar films exist.)

Story-wise, I'd suggest Mignola's Hellboy and B.P.R.D. comics, which are much darker than the films. Since this is a TV and Movie thread though, I think your choices are limited outside of Batman stuff. The Spawn HBO series was gritty and dark, but had its own share of problems.

I just watched the two Iron Man movies back to back. Because I'm bored and its on my mind, I'm going to present my thoughts.
  • Iron Man
  1. Origin Story - Everybody loves the origin. And, in general, they tend to be one of the strongest parts of a character's story. Iron Man is no exception.
  2. General Story - Pretty good, with no obvious holes that I can think of. As I mention below I feel like we never got a proper motivation for Stane's actions, but in general it worked for me.
  3. Flow - The movie never drags, keeping up the pace the whole way through
  4. Villain - Jeff Bridges is great and pulls off the menacing part well, but his character feels off and under explained.
  5. Cast - Perfectly done. RDJ is Tony Stark, Paltrow is a good Pepper, Terrance Howard was a good Rhodey. Also, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. All around, well done.
  • Iron Man 2
  1. General Story - Decent, but with a few obvious holes in it. Whiplash seems prepared to ambush Tony on the raceway - despite the fact that he had only decided minutes earlier to do so. The use of the suit degrades the Palladium core faster, but Tony doesn't decide to use an additional arc reactor like he put in the older, unused versions of the suit.
  2. Flow - The beginning and end parts are good, but the middle - around the time when Rhodey takes the suit - really felt slow to me.
  3. Villain - Excellently done. My one complaint is that Whiplash was underutilized. After the prison break he only has a few scenes until the final battle. I much preferred him to Iron Monger
  4. Cast - RDJ once again pulls off Stark perfectly. I can't help but think that Terrance Howard was a better Rhodey than Don Cheadle was. But Rourke and Rockwell were well cast as the antagonists. ScarJo isn't the best choice for Black Widow and wasn't very good - thankfully, she was much better in the Avengers
  5. Tony Stark - I feel that the personal struggles were brought to an unsatisfactory and hasty conclusion. They basically presented all of the problems Stark went through as the result of knowing the palladium poisoning would kill him, which felt cheap to me. I was hoping that they'd go for a more Demon in a Bottle route.
  • Final Verdict - Despite having a superior villain, Iron Man 2 is worse than the first Iron Man. This is mainly due to issues of pacing and few key plot holes.

I like Ms. Martian.

He was a greedy asshole who wanted to take over the company and make tons of money by selling weapons to everyone.

I actually disagree. I’ll admit, I haven’t seen much of his work outside of Iron Man, but Howard seemed like a terrible actor to me. His dialogue came off wooden and unnatural. Him delivering his lines was actually the weakest part of Iron Man in my opinion. I thought Cheadle was far more natural and convincing as the character, though the overall movie itself was much worse.

Then you'd love Young Justice's version. You really have to check out the first season it its available somewhere.

HED still hasn't given Young Justice a chance? It completely lives up to the quality of writing from the DCAU. I'm enjoying it immensely, and I haven't even heard of several of these characters before!

Honestly, and I know we tend to look at stuff from childhood with rose-tinged glasses, but I think Young Justice surpasses almost everything from the old DCAU. Early Batman TAS was amazing and groundbreaking, but Young Justice is just so masterfully crafted and its serial style is much more like reading a modern comic arc than the old one-and-done episodes. It keeps you guessing in a way that you hotly anticipate the next episode, and the reveals always deliver.
