Default Portal 2 and further thoughts

I've been thinking about this game for awhile now. The ending left me, a cold-hearted, cranky, misanthropic cynic, feeling quite good about things in general, and I think we can agree that it concluded the story thus far quite well.

But is it not written that gamers are insatiable in their appetites? And I have heard spoken desires that Valve should break their vow to never create a trilogy and make yet another sequel.

A Portal 3.

As a proponent of True Narrative, that is, stories that exist for the sake of the telling, rather than the sake of squeezing yet more money from established franchises, this strikes me as utterly abhorrent. Portal 2 had a fantastic ending. It was clean, it was satisfying, it wrapped up all the necessary loose ends. Why should we demand a third installment? Is it not more pleasing to believe that Chell has escaped the facility for good, to go on to live a life once again free from the machinations of rogue artificial intelligence?

What are your collective thoughts on this matter, oh Scrolls of Lore? Would you agree with my, accurate and enlightened, opinion? Or would you cast your lot in with the plebeian scum that just wants to see more of that zany Glados and her crazy pranks?

I liked the end, mostly because I fired a portal at the moon the very second it appeared without any thought what so ever and shit just went down right away. Wheatley and the Space Core in space were a perfect ending for the pair of games I thought.

A similar thread was made a while ago here.

My biggest question after finishing Portal 2 was "Why didn't the turrets shoot you, and why are the turrets singing?" Half-life and Portal 1 did not tell you much of anything, but there was countless foreshadowing in portal 2. It was foreshadowed that the turrets could sing, but one can only guess why they did why they did at the end. I can list guesses, but they can't be proven.

I didn't even question that, I saw it as GLADOS saying "I could kill you, but get the fuck out, heres some elevator music."

It was never foreshadowed that GLaDOS could control the turrets, only deploy them.

The have little antennas for some reason, but this is never utilized.

I have a different idea, but I can't really support it either.

Turrets are weird. That's all the explanation you really need.

They're all a bit odd, and it is not entirely unlikely that they were merely told, probably by Glados-as-master-of-all-Aperture, that unit 'Chell' is no longer to be considered a threat.

Are you really going to read plot significance into an operatic chorus of intelligent machinery?

If there is a Portal 3 we should get a new protagonist, not Chell.

I still want them to make F-Stop.

They are, but that is unsatisfying.

Maybe. See my last post. It was never forshadowd that she could tell them things, and this view was actually subverted a few times.

Yes. If there was a plot at all, I count that as part of it.

See, I'd be okay with that. Just don't involve Chell. That's all I ask.

Sometimes a story needs to end. It shows maturity and competence on the part of the writers.

I loved the Turret Opera... even did my own version of it, and frankly, I thought the ending was a good place to end the whole Portal story, if not Chell's.

Granted, I perhaps read into things that may not even be there, but there was more good story written there than bad. So, I can't really complain.

I loved it too, but I still wonder why.

I'd tell you my fanon, but it would only be shot down with more fanon.

Originally Chell wasn't going to be in Portal 2, but all the playtesters complained that it wasn't portal with a new person. So if they do make a Portal 3 she'll probably end up coming back. That and Valve has already hinted about Portal 3 several times.

-They said that "you won't see a 3D game from us until Portal 3".

-In an interview a Valve employee was asked "what happened to the mantis men mentioned in Portal 2" and replied "I can't give away details from future installments".

So it's probably happening, but I agree it was a pretty good ending. Or at least single player was. Co-Op's campaign ends with a huge "To Be Continued..." type ending.

The main playtester complaint with Portal 2 was that it didn't have portals. And I think I would've complained if Chell wasn't brought back for Portal 2 too. But now I think its time to move on from Chell.

Personally, I hope they continue it more in add-ons to Portal 2 than a new game. And use the mantis-men in Half-Life somewhere.

One neat thing, on TV Trope's Wild Mass Guessing page someone put "Portal 3 will be an MMO", with Valve saying Portal 2 is their last single player game and the ending of the Co-Op mode... I could see it happening. GLaDOS does have thousands of new test subjects ripe for player avatars now....

Portal is, perhaps, the game least suited to the MMO format I can possibly think of.

And Valve just said that Portal 2 was probably their last single-player only thing. They clarified that they'd add extra connectivity things and optional co-op, things like that. So, like, in HL you'd be playing as Gordon but if your friend wants to play too they can be Alex. Something like that.

The Chell complaint was that, while she does have some subtle backstory, Chell is a stand-in for the player. In Portal 2, in GLaDOS' wake-up scene, the player's relationship with her was reset, and people took it personally.

Yeah right, like Valve ever intends to make another Half-Life game.

I'm wondering if Portal 2's showing the Earth to not be combine ruled is Valve's way of saying "there you have it: Gordon won, combines lost. The End".

Beating the Combine wouldn't magically make the Earth like it was before. I just think Valve never thought about making a custom earth instead of using NASA photos and what not.

I meant how there was a wheat field and no sign of combine cities or machines anywhere. Considering they were even draining the oceans I would imagine if they won the entire Earth would have been terraformed.

You see a normal Earth from space. No drastic coastline changes.

Maybe Gordon got the oceans back?

Speaking of Portal....

SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION: Being Human, a Portal fanfiction by me!

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7178385/1/Being_Human

It's humor story which focuses on the characters doing funny stuff. Mainly Chell attempting to readjust to human society and Wheatley dealing with being put in a human body by GLaDOS for a combination of "better punishment than space" and "evil science experiment". There's also a ton of inexplicable cameos and shout-outs to various internet memes and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Nobody likes my story?

Anyways the new dlc called "Peer Review" comes out October 4th. It will feature a new multi-player story campaign about ATLAS and P-Body's fate after finding the frozen test subjects. Also a challenge mode will be added for single and multiplayer.
