Default The SoL Guide to RP volume 1: Night Elves

So remember when I said "I'd love to write a RP guide on night elves but I'm too busy?"

And then remember when I also said, probably drunk, that I am the Admin of Scrolls of Lore, the single most destructive force in the world (of Warcraft)?

Well I'm going to harness that power. Because if slave labor was good enough for the pyramids oh you'd best believe it's good enough for me!

So here's what I'ma do. I'm going to have you guys help me write a RP guide, especially find cited sources for it- since that's the problem with a lot of RP guides, they present the writers' fanon as canon. Well that aint how I fly. I want quest IDs, I want page numbers, I want comic issues.

So here's the structure of the guide- I want you to find information relevant to these sections, maybe a little summary of what you have (especially if it's not a quest or something that can be easily linked to). Remember that the RPG is not canon and that newer lore takes precedence over old lore. Start with Cata-era information and work your way back, chances are information from the WCIII era has probably been retconned.

When providing a citation please state what part of the guide it is relevant to, or if is not yet part of the guide but you find the citation is an important piece of lore, feel free to suggest an addition

Government and Politics - Part 2 - International Relations:

Quote:
Early in the friendship between night elves and humans, it became apparent that much of the human population had neither the time nor the patience to learn full Darnassian.

As communication is a cornerstone of friendship, the night elves decided to teach their population Common in addition to their own language. After several years every night elf was trained and can now communicate effortlessly in Common.
World of Warcraft Battlechest Guide, page 152

Domestic life of the average night elf citizen:

Quote:
As one of the longest living races in Azeroth, night elves tend to be slow to change. Slow to anger and slow to cool off, the night elves experience emotions as deeply, or perhaps more so, than the younger races. While generally slow to respond emotionally, their minds have seen much and tend to have a honed wit and sense of humor.
World of Warcraft Battlechest Guide, page 153

I'll be scouring all my material for more shit when I've got time.

Excellent, slave. While you're at it, fan my reclining body with palm fronds, will you?

Wowhead, yes, because it extracts its info directly from the game.

Wowpedia, no, unless it's a direct quote with a proper citation attached to it.

Mostly this is about their diet, but there's some info here and there that can be used in other sections.

I'll underline what i think it's important.

Recipes of the Night Elves:
* Kaldorei Spider Kabob
* Kimchi
* Rice Flour
* Spice Bread
* Blessed Rice Cakes
* Ribs

Domestic life of the average night elf citizen
Quote:
Long ago, the night elves were called the kaldorei, a name that means "children of the stars." Learning of the past is an important step in your path as a <class>, <name>, so listen well to what I have to tell you.

The kaldorei have always taken much pride in their harmonious relationship with nature. This means that we only take from nature what is necessary, and that we return in kind. This balance has afforded us much, <name>.

Go out and collect seven small spider legs -- no more than that, and return to me.
Reward:Recipe: Kaldorei Spider Kabob
Source: Quest:Recipe of the Kaldorei

Here's a night elf recipe and how they view hunting in general (i think)

Ironically they want 7 spider legs and spiders have 8 legs XD

Kimchi
Quote:
My family has been making the best kimchi in Darnassus for generations, <name>. The secret is something simple, but it makes all the difference.

We bury the jars in the ground until it's ready to serve and my latest batch has just reached that point. You can find the jars buried in earthen mounds all over the city. Would you help me gather them while the contents are just right?
Source: Quest: The Secret to Perfect Kimchi

Kimchi as a traditional night elf recipe

Quote:
There are certain things that everyone needs, from the basic household cook to the master chef. One of the city's most important staples is rice flour. Most families keep at least one basket of rice in their houses and the residents of the Craftsmen's Terrace and Tradesmen's Terrace are no different.

I often ask my students to help with the task of pounding rice into flour since it's good practice and an endless task. Why don't you give it a try?
Source: Quest:Back to Basics

Staple food of darnassus and the importance of rice in night elf culture (where are the crops?)

Quote:
Isn't it amazing how something as simple as spice bread is used every day in Darnassus? When I'm not seeing to my other responsibilities, I like to bake spice bread to hone my skills as a cook and practice my technique.

Why don't you give it a try? You should be able to get your ingredients here in the shop.

No matter how much we make, it never goes to waste. Bring me your loaves when you're done and I'll have someone share them with our friends, the Gilneans.
Quest:Spice Bread Aplenty

Spice Bread is important, and they are comfortable enough with the Gilneans to give it to them.

Quote:
The living are not the only ones who require sustenance. One of my duties is to prepare the rice cakes that are left for the ancestors. Normally, my senior apprentice has the honor of taking the cakes to the Temple of the Moon for blessing and then presenting them to the ancestors. Since she is out of the city today, would you mind performing the duty in her place?

Completion:<You lay out the rice cakes around the shrine, which begins to glow softly. A faint sense of approval washes over you.>
Source: Quest:Remembering the Ancestors

Apparently the night elves do a bit of ancestor worship with rice cakes, they answer back.

Quote:
One of my responsibilities is to feed the sentinels of Darnassus while they're on duty. It's a time-consuming task, but one I'm happy to undertake. It's also a great way to practice your skills. Would you mind helping me with today's meal? Simply take these ribs, cook them near a stove or fire, and distribute them to sentinels throughout the city.
Source: Quest:Ribs for the Sentinels

One of the things sentinels in Darnassus eat while on duty is Ribs(of a unspecified creature)

What we're going to get credit for this?

Only Maiev comes to mind when you say that

History

Long Vigil

Quote:
A number of Highborne fled the royal palace before the Sundering and rejoined the main force of night elf defenders, fleeing the disaster with them and winding up on Mount Hyjal. Although these Highborne had realized their folly in having aided the Legion, they still did not agree with the majority of night elf society, which had decided that arcane magic was too dangerous to use. These Highborne were eventually exiled for refusing to give up their arcane sorcery. Renouncing their former people, the exiles eventually founded the kingdom of Quel'Thalas and renamed themselves high elves. Today there are very few high elves left on Azeroth, for most of the high elves who survived the Scourge's invasion of Quel'Thalas have since declared themselves to be blood elves.
The Warcraft Encyclopedia, Highborne, History and Organization.

Arcane sorcery forbidden, at least in the Highborne way.

Quote:
Not all the Highborne lived in Zin-Azshari, despite their obsession with the Well of Eternity. For a variety of political or personal reasons, certain members of the nobility opted to live outside the capital city. Moreover, not all night elves (or other races of Kalimdor) joined the main force of night elf defenders. Such holdouts were not necessarily resistant to the idea of joining their compatriots. Indeed, it seems likelier that these small pockets of resistance had heard nothing of the primary defending force and were unaware of the demonic invasion's massive scope.
The Warcraft Encyclopedia, Highborne, History and Organization.

Not all Highborne lived in Zin-Azshari, explaining the existance of Eldre'Thalas, Eldre'Thar, Kel'theril and the Darkshore's cities.

Quote:
Tyrande Whisperwind, now high priestess of Elune, implemented sweeping changes throughout night elf society. She organized a new all-female army, the Sentinels, and decreed that it would be directed by the Sisterhood of Elune. Nobility and sorcery were now considered the relics of a decadent and shameful past.
The Warcraft Encyclopedia, Cenarius, Seclusion of the Night Elves.

Nobility and sorcery were "replaced" by the cult of Elune.

Quote:
Nevertheless, a group of Highborne under Dath'Remar Sunstrider refused to give up practicing arcane magic. After discussing the matter at length, Tyrande and Malfurion made the difficult decision to exile their defiant kin. In the wake of the group's departure, the remaining night elves deliberately withdrew from the rest of the world. A veil of mist descended upon their entire continent, shrouding its presence from passing sailors.
The Warcraft Encyclopedia, Cenarius, Seclusion of the Night Elves.

Kalimdor was shrouded with mist after the Highborne left.

Magic and spirituality of the modern night elf

Egalitarianism in the post Reign of Chaos era

Quote:
Until the end of the Third War, all druids in the Cenarion Circle were men, and almost all were night elves. Women druids and druids from other races are not necessarily a recent development, but until the war, such druids were relatively rare and often had no affiliation with the Cenarion Circle.
The Warcraft Encyclopedia, Cenarion Circle, Membership.

Precedent of female druids.

Just to nitpick, it's not really the "cult" of Elune,

No more than Christianity is a cult.

Technically true, though so I guess its just a personal pet peeve.

I think he meant, like, in the past it was forbidden.

Also, I'll help work on this when I get home. I have some other things I need to do but I'll help where I can.

Ah, okey.

By the way, what are you going to do with all this material? Will you release a finished SoL guide when you feel it's "done"?

It's a cult in the Greco-roman sense of the term. Elune is a divinity in a pantheon but is worshiped almost exclusively compared to the other gods. I didn't mean to imply illegitimacy or a recent origin.

Yeah, and when it's done I'll cross post it to various RP realm forums. If it goes over well, I plan to do more for races I feel are poorly RPed like worgen and blood elves.
