Sounds like you need a good, healthy revolution down there.

Sadly, these things seldom reach a satisfactory conclusion without substantial bloodshed. Watch your ass and wear a helmet.

Good coup or bad coup? As in: you got a regime going on that's gonna fall or something more nasty like a group trying to pull a Nazi Deutschland?

Do you live in a relevant place? Start stockpiling food/toilet paper like we do in each elections (just in case)

Water, Toilet Paper, Food cans, maybe some additional cloths and a crowbar, Freeman-style. That sounds stupid, but seriously, those fuckers are handy tools and can be utilized as pretty easy to handle weapons if you REALLY need one and don't have a gun.

I'm not leaving my house today. A few friends want to go and protest in Asunción (I usually join them, but today is not a good day). I'll watch my ass.

Well, the situation over here is mixed. To be honest, I don't have major problems with Lugo. He did some good things, education and social-wise.

What I'd like is a change in the congress. Most people are there since 1992 or so (After General Stroessner dictatorship fell). They mostly work against the people. Recently there has been an issue with a proposal for unblocking the voting lists. There have been protests and all the like this last month.

Most 'rational' and young people agree it's just a distraction and this change is for the worse, because it won't fix anything and will likely spawn some civilian deaths. However, most part of the country is aligned with the republicans and liberals because they have been bought by the parties, and they both want Lugo down.

I live in a city next to the capital. 45 minutes from the center, where the congress is. I don't think I'll get affected or anything, but there have been sightings of snipers atop buildings and farmers are coming from all across the country to defend the president.

My dad is a part of the navy, though. I hope he doesn't get hurt

I see, thanks for replying. But does Lugo have tangibleand substancial social support? How come most of the Congress is still the same? Didn't Lugo managed to get his own presence in the Congress?

Most supporters are farmers aligned with the 'Frente Guazu' (left winged) and middle-high class leftists from the capital, which are a minority. I think the farmer presence will be a good indicator. Let's see how many of them come here today.

The congress is still the same because of the blocked voting lists. Basically, they senators are elected along the governors and others in a unified list. You can't vote for them individually, so they get there thanks to their partners.

Oh I see now I get what you meant.

Well you all have my support from Argentina, I doubt Brazil and the other MERCOSUR countries would allow a coup, or recognize a goverment coming from one. But if one does happen, know that there are going to be a lot of protests in Argentina in solidarity with Paraguay. Atleeast here in the capital.

Hope everything turns for the best!! Will keep following this situation.

The problem with South American politics is the population is generally dumb.

Don't get offended, I know you aren't, but when politicians get votes in such shameless populist and demagogic ways, you realize they are voting people that lies to them every day.

Your problem is people needs to be less dumb, and vote seriously, so your politicians do their job instead of retarded stuff that does you no good.

You have Chavez, blaming USA for running out of paper in the toilet. You have Kirchner, using her dead husband as an excuse to pull out retarded stuff. And I could go on and on.

You all need serious politicians, but you won't get them if you keep voting like idiots. Look at Brasil, and see by yourselves how things can be improved. What do you want, another demagogic populist retard sucking out your blood and money, or someone in the style of Lula da Silva, who does his job?

You voted those politicians you're hating now. Every single of them. And after these protests, you'll vote for them again. That's your problem (and pretty much the problem of every democracy, but it's worse in your case because your politicians are worse).

I've been watching things on the periphery for awhile, but didn't realize it was this heated. Good luck, stay safe, and if you (or your family) ever need anything from the states (or a place to escape if there's all out chaos) I'm happy to help.

I dont know about the other countries, only about Venezuela. Back in the day, when Chavez became president the country was relatively in bad shape, Chavez was the head of the attempted coup and because of the country conditions he got popular. When he got in the government he seized control over the other public organs (among those the institution charged with the voting) by either firing and replacing or corrupting the people working there (the relevant one). The people with minor jobs get threatened with...well...their jobs. Massive firings happened some years ago because they unveiled a list of people who voted to make a referendum to make him resign.

Nothenless there is a way.

I will keep reading the internet to stay informed.

At least UNASUR sent their delegation. I agree that they won't allow a coup or recognize one.

If you guys need foreign volunteers let me know.

Although I'm not sure who the bad guys are, if there are any.

Of course. I say this every day of my life. Each country has the government it deserves. The protests for the unblocked voting lists are a step in the right direction, because that would enable the general population to improve the suffrage.

Thanks again! The only bad guys here are the politicians, sadly.

There's 4000 policemen coming to Asunción and 150 buses with farmers from all across the country. They'll be in the capital in aroud 2-3 hours.

The real conflict won't start until then.

There's almost always a problem with these kinda things: the leader does bad things > people revolt > leader goes away/gets killed > 'new' regime takes the reigns > 'new' regime starts doing the same things as the old leader > people revolt etc....

@ Kike-Scott, if I were you, I wouldn't demonstrate today... Bad things may happen if the army/police can't control the masses....

Unless it's to further the creation of a constitutional republic, and it's backed by intelligent men and a militia that has a snowball's chance of winning, it's not worth dying for.

While I don't want to steal your thread, but there's some shit, albeit smaller, going down in the town where most of my family lives in Mexico, Tepehuanes Durango. Apparently the Mexican DEA have seized most of the towns trying to "scoop" out criminals, yet their taking into their custody people without anyone knowing, including women and children, and basically have the whole place on lockdown. People used to be afraid of going out at night because of the cartels before, but now they have to be afraid of even their own government. And the only reason people are finding out is because of the good old internet, otherwise it would have gone unnoticed.
