My eponymous mage graduated from the Stormwind Academy of Arcane Arts and Science just before the start of the Northrend War (or whatever one would call it), and went to Dalaran to help out.... and to focus on her "big project" of studying the runic magic of the vrykul, so she spent some time in the eastern end to take what she could. She also helped out in Icecrown Citadel... by helping to portal out the wounded back to Dalaran.

She wanted to focus on vrykul runes because of a general lack of interest in everyone else's part, and so she would be able to gain more recognition for that... Her goal is to become an archmage, after all!

She's also gone into Zul'Gurub the second time around to learn the Zandalari glyph magic.

My night elven archer participated in the Battle for Mount Hyjal... that's about it, though, as I don't really roleplay her.

My death knight, originally a paladin, sought to save as many draenei from the orcs, especially as she lost her own children, and eventually went into the Plaguelands to help out against the Scourge. Needless to say, she became a death knight then, and headed with the rest of the Knights of the Ebon Blade into Northrend to strike against the Scourge.

My blood elf warlock ran around with Kael'thas's forces in the third war, back when she was a mage, and headed with him to Outland. Along with others, she was placed under Illidan's command by Kael'thas as a 'gift', and was left behind when Kael'thas joined the Burning Legion. When the raid(s) came around and cleared the place out, she ended up hiding... and eventually came out to surrender to some Scyers. She was then handed over to Silvermoon, at which point she was denied the opportunity to sate her addiction, and ended up making a deal with a non-comedic-relief imp to gain satisfaction. And so she became a warlock and was eventually thrown out when Silvermoon's torturers were sure that she had nothing else to provide. Since she served Illidan out of ignorance of Kael'thas's betrayal, and didn't go out with other forces to attack Shattrath, she was eventually let go, though heavily monitored.

Race: Dwarf
Name: Dwalinn Drakedoom
Age: 64
Class: Shaman
Hobbies: Observing/studying the various races of Azeroth and helping others in their struggles.
Place of origin: Ironforge

Dwalinns parents were Bronzebeard Dwarves and ambassadors of Ironforge in the Aerie Peaks, home of the Wildhammer Clan. They often traveled between those big, Dwarven cities. One day Dwalinn was born and he lived happily with his parents in Ironforge for a time. Until his parents had to go to the Aerie Peaks again. His parents had no living relatives or very good friends to leave their baby with, so they decided to take little Dwalinn with them. When the small delegation, consisting of 9 dwarves, almost reached the Peaks, they were ambushed. A group of at least a dozen Forest Trolls attacked the small party. The Dwarves were able to fend them of, but at a cost, 5 of them died in the battle, including both of Dwalinns parents…

The delegation, with the orphaned Dwalinn, reached the Aerie Peaks. Dwalinn soon was adopted by a loving Wildhammer couple that weren’t able to get children themselves. And so he grew up, learning the ways of the Wildhammer (although he didn’t take tattoos, only 'pure' Wildhammer Dwarves have them), but still retaining his Bronzebeard blood. Dwalinn learned to fly a Gryphon, he learned to drink like a Wildhammer and above all else, he learned to listen to the Elements. He was taught the art of the Shaman that could call on the Elements to aid him in times of peace, or at times of war…

Stormwind was destroyed by the Horde and a coalition was formed between the Humans, Elves, Dwarves and Gnomes, called The Alliance of Lordaeron. The Wildhammer Clan also joined in this Alliance, but didn’t see much conflict at first, but that changed... The Hinterlands soon came under assault by the Amani Trolls and a huge army of Orcs, the Dwarves had to arm themselves and sent their best fighters into the fray. The Wildhammer Clan then dedicated themselves to drive every member of the Horde off the continent of Lordaeron.

Dwalinn was part of a group of Gryphon-riders that fought many battles in the Second War. He also gained his last name in this war, Drakedoom, for slaying many a drake in the skies of Lordaeron. When the war finally ended, a time of relative peace started.

But this peace didn’t last long… The plague soon swept over the lands of Lordaeron, killing almost every Human living there. The Hinterlands stood hopeless by as the lands around it were being filled with the stench of dead and decay. Lordaeron, Quel'thalas and Dalaran were destroyed and Stromgarde, Kul Tiras and Gilneas also came under assault by the Scourge. Our Dwarf, together with his fellow Gryphon-riders, was sent for various patrols, fighting the Scourge and helping the few refugees left...

Years past, the Burning Legion and Illidan were stopped at Mount Hyjal and in Outland, the Lich-King was destroyed in Northrend and Dwalinn went everywhere where the New Alliance went, fighting across the world and establishing contact with the native species. But conclict still existed, the Cataclysm soon broke out, Deathwing and the ominous Twilight cult literally emerged from the shadows to destroy the world. As if it couldn’t get worse, the Horde broke their frail treaty with the Alliance, and now under the lead of Garrosh Hellscream, attacked them on an already war-torn Azeroth.

Magni Bronzebeard was petrified and his estranged daughter wanted the crown, so the Council of Three Hammers was established and Dwalinn was invited to go there as an ambassador, but he didn’t want to go to Ironforge. He didn’t want to get reminded of the past, he wanted to look to the future, to help the Alliance and the Wildhammer Clan restore it’s rightful place in the world.

New adventures are waiting, as the conflict between the Horde and the Alliance escalates, the mists around a mysterious continent will finally disappear….

I hope it's not that cliche or Mary Sue'ish.
EDIT: Did some much-needed editing.

Eraatu is a 30,000 year old draenei mage that has quite literally seen it all. And he got cursed by a dying eredar warlock and is unable to cast any of his really awesome magic (it puts him in a coma that lasts longer and longer every time he tries). He's like an alien Dumbledore that likes women. And he's a problem drinker; whenever he's like really sad, he just goes and gets so drunk that he thinks he's a sailor.

Santhiel is a night elf death knight. Once upon a time he was a novice druid that had just really hit adulthood (it was sometime after the WotA, and before Malfurion's slumber party where all the dudes took a long nap). So anyway, he goes into the druidic hibernation and when he wakes up there's Scourge and Demons wrecking the forest. Then he gets killed and brought back as a death knight specializing in spreading plague and disease, instead of curing them as he had previously.

Koonu is Eraatu's eldest surviving son and he's an angsty warrior in the vein of Inigo Montoya; he thinks every orc is the one that cut down his mother during the sacking of Shattrath (even though the real orc was Grom "Motherfucking" Hellscream). He blames his father for not using all of his magical powers to save her. He abstains from alcohol and drugs, preferring to just kill the fuck out of orcs and demons. And Dragons. And rogue elementals. And unsavory members of society.

Maanu is Eraatu's other surviving son and he's a shaman that hears the whispers of the Old Gods. He's slowly going crazy, but has so far remained uncorrupted, probably due to his faith in the Light being so strong. He's always talking to the voices, but it's usually just nonsense about how after they've killed everything, he'll have all the time he needs to really understand the Light. Because, as stated, Mannu is fucking crazy.

Draxar is a grizzled orc rogue that has acted as a spy, scout, soldier, and assassin for every Warchief the Horde has known. He's jaded and quite unattached to anything. He's rude and bitter and addicted to demon blood (he doesn't drink it anymore, but he does rub it on his skin and absorb it into his system). Its why he still looks so young and strong, despite being like...almost 60.

I love how a general question on one aspect of designing your RP character's backstory just became an excuse for people to share their entire character's backstory.

Personally, I like to make my Human characters either veterans of the Second or Third war, and hail from either Stormwind or Stromgarde. Especially my Human DK who is pretty much a veteran of the Second and Third war and hails from Stormwind. (I often wonder if it's actually okay to RP as a Lord or Lady, a member of the more royal caste. Or in the case of DK, the character could have been part of the more royal castes in his/her early life.)

Don't RP anymore, but when I did RP as a human, I made him a teenager in the midst of the third war and he experienced tragedy, losing his entire family blah blah. He made his way alone to Stormwind and grew up the rest of the way there, trained and then made it his goal to help retake Lordaeron and secure his past home again.

Or something like that. RP'd in the Kul Tiras Marines of Maelstrom (I think that's the server), great guild.

My Forsaken Mage was training under the conjurers of Stormwind but left just before the orcs arrived, to study in Dalaran. He fought in the Second War and helped hold off the Scourge attack on Dalaran in the Third, before dying from Archimonde destroying the city.

My worgen was in the War of the Satyr (night elf worgen > Gilnean worgen, trufax), and his sister (one of my many Druids) went on to fight in the War of the Shifting Sands and Battle of Mount Hyjal.

Edit: Woops not the Hunter, it's the Druid who's his sister.

Since I am not on a roleplay server, I don't RP most of my characters. Only my two mains got a background:

Afaslizo, blood elf paladin, was disgusted by the imprisonment of the Naaru and deserted the blood elves in Zangarmarsh becoming a honorary member of the Cenarion Circle. Instead of sapping magic from everyone avaible he picked his victims carefully, only taking it from evil adversaries. When the blood elves reconciled with the light he rejoined his brethren. As for the wars prior the opening of the Dark Portal he served a an apprentice priest back in the Sanctum of the East but took up arms when the undead attacked only to be injured at the first battle and evacuated with other victims to the far northeastern shore.
After the Dark Portal opened his prime achievement was the defeat of Quagmirran in the Slave Pens alongside some druids of the Cenarion Circle(Coilfang instances are by far my favourite ones in the game). He also took part in the campaign against the lich king to right his failure in the defence of his homeland. Irritated by the Argent Crusade which wasted the strength of the armies by sponsering a killing tournament which thinned the light's champions he instead helped to mount an attack on Ulduar to stop the Old God from succeding.

In the meantime a young Tauren shaman named Hearn rose to majurity at the end of the Horde engagement in Outland. While the other elemental spirits allways offered council to him he never experienced the wind speaking to him. In the end the expedition to Northrend led him to the most distant peaks in the Stormpeaks where he battled the North Wind(my favourite storyline in Wrath) on behalf of a very old Tauren watcher far away from those big and "important" foes and battles. It was there where the voice of the wind spoke to him and sent him of on a spiritual voyage while the world was torn asunder. This challenge got him into Uldum where he had to suffer the blather and false heroism of one Harrison Jones who latter depicted himself as the savior despite his failures (I really hate Uldum for its wasted potential, dull and dumb storylines).

And of course, I feel that a Human or Orc with the Mining profession is ripe for having a background as a Peasant or Peon.

No, that was Varian's half-draenei older brother, who was raised as a death knight by Arthas after King Llane had the half-breed killed.

Telani of Argus is my draenei magus, an old mage that was one of the many servants of Kil'Jaeden back on Argus. She was the crystal scribe in charge of keeping and archiving the many speeches and eloquent quotes of her master and secretly hoping to gain his favors. When he accepted the gift of Sargeras and began to change, she was utterly horrified and escaped to seek the protection of the Prophet and his followers, on their way to the mountains of Argus.
On Draenor she became a teacher for the young draeneis of Shattrath, passing down to them the history of the Exiled.
After the genocide, she move from Telredor to travel across the remnants of Draenor, until discovering Kirin'Var where she stayed with the mages, learning about Azeroth and their ways of weaving the arcane.
When Kael'Thas came to destroy the city, she fled again to join with Velen, and took part in the retaking of the Exodar.
Since that day she took part in most of the events of Azeroth, enlisting in the ranks of the New Tirisfal Council.

My death knight was a scarlet crusader who was an officier during the first assault on Icecrown, and was manipulated by one of the first san'layns in claiming an old rune sword, leaving behind her the meaningless life of a holy warrior and her soul to become one of the Lich King's champions, in order to survive the bitting winds of the cold North.
After the events of Light's Hope she joined the Ebon Blade, and now she chill in Icecrown Citadel with some others ebon knights, guarding the new Lich King and the secret of his existence.

I have other characters of course, but those two are the most "serious business" among them.

It's easy to accuse characters of being fan Mary Sues or Gumps. But then you realize... it's entirely possible that your character completed several tasks for Thrall, or went on a private ride alongside Sylvanas, or killed Zul'jin, Kargath Bladefist, Cho'gall, Deathwing, Illidan, Arthas, Kael'thas...

...so who's to say that your Dwarf character didn't save Muradin's life in Northrend?

Well, when we have Med'An as official character in a setting...it is difficult to out-mary sue something like this, I think.

Or, your Gnome Warlock may have served on a submarine during the Second War, and after a battle was enthralled by the Goblins' Sea Turtles--weapons that had managed to combine technology with an arcane control over animals themselves! This simple glimpse of warlock power could have flooded your mind with possible utilities of magic combined with technology, which led to your first taste of the fel, which sadly drove you into a desperate addiction.

EDIT: Or, starting more recently, the radioactive disaster with the Troggs in Gnomeregan has shaken your faith in secular industry. If Gnomes are the most intelligent beings in Azeroth-world (as you'd assuredly believe them to be), then how is it that while other societies thrive, yours is ravaged by simple-minded monsters who shrugged off your most potent weaponry? Surely your intelligence---surely Gnomish intelligence---can be channeled to discover even more powerful weapons. But perhaps these weapons, can be found in the demonic arts. Sure, others have failed to control this power, but they weren't as smart as Gnomes! And then, you find yourself addicted to fel. But doesn't it taste wonderful?
