Default Iron Man? Pffft, Gundam FTW!

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/0...icsuit_051508/

This technology would be much better applied to making real-life Mech suits

Well "iron man" suits have been under developement for some time now. I believe a couple years ago Japan developed one that some consider better than the one the US is currently testing. The thing that tripped me out about the Japanese one, though, is that it's made by a company called Cyberdyne... Skynet will take over in 2012? Lawl, but seriously, why bother trying to make the technology smaller rather than just making big ass mech suits to siege our enemies with? Pretty sure the Taliban would shit their pants if they saw 100 of these...

marching toward them... rofl.

Now if they can just make a fully functional one... one that doesn't have a glass opening in the front, it has to be all metal with a HUD of some sort or they'll jsut get shot in the face

Yeah, heavily armored war machines with windshields is pretty counter-intuitive.

It works in BattleTech, but that's only because the windshield isn't a windshield so much as a tiny hole that explodes open when you pull your ejection lever.

Speaking of which, battle armor FTW. Jesus christ, battle armor FTW. Much as I love my OmniMech, the future isn't in giant robots, it's in wrapping a tank around one person and letting a single guy sweep whole buildings while being totally impervious to small arms.

Yea totally. Even if they didn't want to pour the money into making huge robots they could always just adapt the technology to make something not quite as streamlined as an Ironman suit but still small enough to get into buildings.

Don't get me wrong but I do like Avatar as a movie.

As for my point of view I do not think mech combat is part of the near future, instead we will get armoured soldiers that are powered-up compared to normal soldiers.

It's not so much a matter of money, so much as no matter how big the giant robot, a tank will be easier to maintain, faster to build, and harder to take apart.

You have to remember, though, that as time goes on and technology advances the average tank may not become a thing of the past but it will have to step aside for the next big thing. Even now the older model tanks may be about to make way for things like http://www.popsci.com/invention. An unmanned tank that can drive over nearly any obstacle. And once the technology used to create things such as the 'Iron-Man' suit becomes a more exact science it will become cheaper and faster to make and in the future could become a very real part of our military arenal.

I don't necessarily mean a modern tank, I just mean "a tank-shaped thing." A motorized armored vehicle with a lower target profile to make it harder to hit, treaded locomotion to handle uneven terrain, and a turret to allow a full field of fire. It's pretty much the ideal shape for any kind of armored fighting vehicle, no matter what you put inside it.

I heard about a tank they are testing, or at least were, in which it has a "force field" around it which disable RPGs when they pass through the "force field".

On a related note.
