Default Blizz Plans on Selling Ingame Cinematics

http://pc.ign.com/articles/112/1120940p1.html

Quote:
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said it's likely his company will begin selling in-engine cutscenes as full movies in the near future.

Speaking today at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in California, Kotick said StarCraft II's in-game cinematics are so good that the publisher could edit them into one film and distribute it to fans digitally, a move, he said, is likely to happen sometime in the next five years.

"If we were to take that hour, or hour an a half, and take it out of the game and we were to go to our audiences, who we have their credit card information a direct relationship, and say to them 'Would you like to have the StarCraft movie?'

Kotick continued to say he believes his business model is superior to that of current film studios, saying a StarCraft movie distributed by the publisher would crush any opening weekend box office record ever.

"My guess is unlike film studios that are really stuck with a model that goes through theatrical distribution and takes a signification amount of the profit away, if we were to go to an audience and say 'We have this great hour and a half of linear video that we'd like to make available to you at a $20 or $30 price point,' you'd have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever," he said.

"Within the next five years, you are likely to see us do that. It might be in a partnership with somebody or alone, but there will be a time where we'll capitalize on the relationship we have with our audience; deliver them something that is really extraordinary and let them consume it directly through us instead of theatrical distribution.

"If we were to deliver a film digitally this way, I'd say an extremely high percentage would then go to the theater and watch it again."

Would you pay to watch an in-game cutscene movie?
...Really? Selling machinima movies?

How is this anything different than, say, Final fantasy: Advent Children?

That said, while I don't have a problem with it, I think a $20-$30 pricepoint is a bit much. $10-15 is more reasonable, and I also doubt they'd shatter any box office records.

I'd expect to see it pirated within hours, to be honest. Digital distribution of a film is just asking for it.

I don't know if you realise this but the in ship stuff in Starcraft 2 went beyond standard machinima in its current form. We are also talking 5 years from now, and while they are using Starcraft 2 as an example, it's pretty safe to assume that within the next 5 years both expansions will be out. So yes, their next gen products with even higher between scenes stuff, sounds good to me. Your wording just made it sound like they are planning on selling WoW machinima, which isn't at all the case. Besides, Starcraft 2 raised the bar, and it isn't like they are using in game models for those but rather higher quality ones. Take a look at how much the game industry/technology/graphics/animations have improved since 5 years ago over all (for most products), 5 years is a long time when it comes to games and cinimatics man...

I do wonder this means that people who have the cinematics uploaded on youtube will have to take them down. If so, then I would be quite mad at Kotick. If not, well, then there's no reason to buy them.

I was also thinking (after seeing the SC2 cinematics) they could make a movie out of that... but making money out of it? I mean, come on, Kotick must have been Blizzard's inspiration for Goblin characters - making money out of EVERYTHING.

Wonder how long till he has an idea of selling animated gifs of /dances.

At the same time they did say they were looking at hour and a half to two hour run times. Feature full length, as I said earlier, things will greatly improve by then, it's like saying any CG movie we have now should be given for free. Up, Wall-e, Toystory 3 etc, rendered in game has already surpassed (in many cases outside of Blizzard) the early CG movies, and is still growing. While I'll admit, I'd love to not pay for them even if they were only 10-20 dollars, I certainly don't think their logic or want to get paid for it is illogical. They charge you for a novel/comic book about lore as it is, a feature full length should be different why? No where in the article did it seem to imply they would be shorts like now in either WoW or Starcraft 2. Millions of people are already willing to pay for a unique small model without unique animations as it is with the pets from WoW's store, how is 2 hours of unique renders, scripted plot, unique animations and new story somehow less acceptable to ask for people to pay toward.

If it's a full length film, I see no issue with wanting to sell it, but I wouldn't pay $30 for something like that.

I think that was more in reference to the mentions of StarCraft II's cinematics. From the looks of it, this money-grubbing fuck is trying to pinch any penny he can get out of the more successful (and popular) half of Activision Blizzard.

I have a dream.

A dream that in five years, Kotick has managed to run Activision into the ground, and the only profitable franchises in the company are Blizzard games.

A dream that the shareholders get fed up with his shit, fire him, and make Mike Morhaime CEO of the whole company.

And then we'll have Metzen writing the CoD games. And Hitler will come back to life in service of a bunch of aliens.

That's just Bobby, he talks in "shareholderese".

I really don't see the harm in selling the StarCraft 2 cinematics as a "movie" as long as they add enough new detail to fill the gabs normally taken by the missions.

It wouldn't be any worst then a long time ago when I bought a DVD from them just because it had the StarCraft 1 cinematics on it. I think that was like $15. They are already even selling a "collection" for like $75 new now.

FF Advent Children was a movie based off a game.

What Ko-dick is saying is rip the cutscenes from SC2, piece them together in a movie and sell it.

Advent Children was at least not ripped straight from any game. The story was, yes, but everything was 'new'.
