The Horde of WC3 with a dash of the WoW Horde for realism.

Agreed. The idealism and honest to God "trying" was very appealing in the WCIII incarnation, add some corruption and unfortunate elements from the past, as touched down upon in WoW, and you'd have a realistic, dynamic and engaging group.
The failing of the WoW incarnation was that it went too dark, the combination Destron outlined would have been perfect.
Though a WCII incarnation, like you outlined Kir, could be good. As long as they remain largely free of outside influences and do things for their own reasons, also they'd need a comparable enemy to both oppose them and set the tone of the setting to be such that the Horde doesn't come out looking monstrous for its unchecked militarism. The tone I am speaking of is:"World is shit but we're all trying to make the best for our own." The role of that enemy would probably be best fulfilled by a conniving, imperialistic Alliance. Setting up clever political traps for the Horde, generally trying to put as many enemies between the Horde and them as possible. Besides being politically more savvy the Alliance is also better off, initially.
The idea is to put a daunting global challenge to the Horde so that as they overcome one hurdle after the next you can't help but gain a sneaky respect for these would be conquerors. Such an Alliance and Horde would also make for a perfect setting for complex politicking and powerplays which I get the feeling all three of us like.
However the good aspects of a militaristic campaigning empire could be thrown into the "WCIII with a dash of WoW" version well enough by making them more reserved in who they fight so I still feel that is the best version.
