Threatening Enemies and Competent Allies
I feel like Blizzard's taken a nasty turn towards making the player feel badass by making everyone else in the universes of its games helpless and incompetent so they require us saving them for the villains to feel threatening.

Whats more, in order to make the enemies interesting they usually get a lot more depth than the heroes.

Take Diablo III for example, we have tons of different kinds of demons, yet aside from the Archangels, we see all the angelic soldiers as the same two-handed mace-wielding dudes getting smacked down all over the place. Part of this makes sense, given that the demonlords are more discordant and diverse than the angels, who are beings of harmony anyway, but some small modicum of diversity would've still helped.

Same deal with the Trolls having tons of bells and whistles in wow... except for the Darkspear, or the Iron Horde getting giant beasts and guns and whatnot while the modern Horde will never see that kind of stuff.

Or even this bizarre notion that the garrison buildings models should only be used for the garrisons and lower quality buildings should be used everywhere else...

Do you agree, and if so, what can be done to alleviate this trend?

Because these days, seeing a giant monster rip through a dozen guards at the start of an instance doesn't make me think the monster's awesome. It makes me think the guards are made of tissue, they never stop anything.

And I'd rather join the villain half the time because the guys I help are barely competent enough to walk and breathe at the same time.
