She has one skull per shoulder instead of three (for whatever reason), but otherwise it's consistent with RotLK saying the undead Sylvanas wore the same outfit she died in.

Her clothing also got darker, but I guess necromancy leaves stains.

I think that artwork for living Sylvanas is based off the designs drafted up for Blizzard Allstars.

Sylvanas was one of the really tricky cards. Like many Warcraft 3 units, she doesn't have a good piece of official art from that time period. We looked at her representations in official media -- that one patch trailer, etc -- and opted to go for a blue version of her current, undead outfit. We left a lot of it, as was the case with several hero cards, up to the artist, and worked from there (Lothar was another example of this process). I didn't necessarily dig the skulls -- they didn't feel particularly elfy to me -- but Blizzard has the last word, as always.

Now, all the named characters (heroes, etc) had to go through Chris Metzen for approval, since they're his babies, and when our first blue Sylvanas version got to him he gave one of my favorite pieces of feedback from this set: "Dude, she looks like a cop." So he said to give her an autumn leaf-patterned cloak, which he always considered her high elf form to be wearing, and to add several brown areas to her outfit to break up the blues, and that's how we got to where we are.

The Sylvanas Problem was one we ran into a lot -- either too few original media sources or too many conflicting ones -- and we had to go with our gut pre-Blizzard approval on some pieces. Some of them came out great the first round, others needed a little bit more work.

Gul'dan is an example of a design I was a little disappointed in at the end; not because of the artist, who did a great job on the card, but because the latest 3D model is in the WoW one that's, well, it's not very good, you know? Where are those shoulder spike things coming from? Where are they fastened? But we had to use it because it's the only one, and Blizzard artists can't really be tasked off of current work to whip up a new Gul'dan design. Them's the breaks.

I think that if she looked like a cop, you might have been doing something right.

She was supposed to look like a ranger, not a city guard (cop).

I really like the leafpatterned cloak, since it matches the leaves of Quel'Thalas' trees. She should be able to hide in the forest. Something that's not really easy when your are a Blue Power Ranger.

PS: Thanks Mike for the behind-the-scenes info.

I quite like the autumnal look to Sylvanas. She's in Quel'thalas, which appears eternally in autumn colours, so why not wear them? While the skulls look a bit off, it does go with the idea that Sylvanas wears her clothing from life after she died.

As for Gul'dan? I like what the result was, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't alter it a bit. I would have merged qualities of the in-game Gul'dan with the version from WCIII: TFT/the comics. The one thing I especially wanted to see with Gul'dan is the heavy set jaw and prominent chin. And it features! Abeit not as extreme as old art had it. My only question about Gul'dan is why the red eyes? I don't believe he ever drank from the chalice of rebirth. Should the eyes be credited to Kil'jaeden's personal gifts?

As usual, Mr. Sacco... mucho bueno.

Edit: Goodbye designer rank. I shall miss thee.

They're on the in-game model, thanks to his retrofitted Bloodfang Hood.

Can I ask you something, besides this question? How do you come up with the names for the allies and heroes? Is there any particular process you follow or are you guys just that creative? (OK. Some names aren't that great, but I always take a look at the tcg cards when I can't come up with a name for my wow characters... )

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.

Well, once you understand the styles each race uses for names, it's not terribly difficult to come up with the names. The problem is frequency more than knowledge. You'll notice in War of the Ancients, we went the route of naming all the common-level allies generic titles -- Teldrassil Wildguard, Stormwind Crusader, etc -- to ease the burden of having to give unique names to dozens of allies each set. For real, though, there are only so many combinations of stone types, weapons, and "beard/brow" for dwarves before the well starts to run a little dry. Now, of course, we're running up against the relatively small number of synonyms for "hunter", for example. It's a never-ending cycle.

So, any naming conventions you'd like to share? (My subtle plan to coax them out of you was foiled. I'm going with plan B now...)

Thanks for answering, by the way.
