Default Scottish Independence.

So, as most of us probably know, Scotland is going to have an independence referendum this year. In your opinion, should Scotland become independent, or should it remain part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

I personally feel that the Scots should stay in the UK. As far as I feel, the UK is better together.

CoD, I love you, but seriously, stop with these random threads. It's just creating pointless Political/Semi-Political threads that get a few replies then die.

Keep it in International Politics. It's active, it's always getting hits, it'll always get a good response.

Um, as a Englishmen, I say good riddance, the scots cost the UK a ton of money.

As a british person. I don't want them to go anywhere, it is part of my identity as well as theirs. I love the scots, they are a great people, one I have learned much from.

And I count myself British.

Well, yeah, but it doesn't make much of a difference if gets few replies. The point of the thread is the polling that is being done. Polls allow you to see the opinions of those on this forum, and it is relatively easier to vote rather than post.

My knowledge of the situation is too limited to make a proper assessment.

The flag would look kinda silly without the St. Andrew's cross though. Not too mention british superheroes.

Don't know what I feel about flag options without the Scottish blue....

Looks a bit wrong.

With regards to the flag thing, it's also been brought up about how other countries' flag with the union jack in it would also be affected.

I take this as seriously as I take Quebec's desires to be seperate / their own nation.

Not serious at all.

Yeah! I would assume that the commonwealth and dependencies would have to change. Or, remove the Jack all together.

As far as the polls are concerned, the "stay together" option is still far ahead though the lead is not that much. The Catalan referendum may prove to be more interesting.

The lead is decreasing, and that's what I fear. I am sure that Scotland would remain with the UK, but the very fact that such a large percentage of the Scottish population is unhappy with the way the Union is running things now is a bit scary for the future of the Union. I feel that Scotland should be given more powers than it does have now, for if not, then it might lead to a lot of trouble.

It isn't so much that Scotland doesn't like the way Westminster is run, so much as that it dislikes being tied to Conservatives it doesn't vote for.

Anyway, they should remain part of the UK. If Sally was more down to Earth about his 'promises' I could maybe buy into it, but the No's constantly trying to dodge any sort of question posed that isn't answered with "b-b-but muh north sea oil" can't help but make me chuckle. The Whitepaper read like a wishlist rather than something viable. Though frankly at this point the rest of the UK should just kick London out and that would probably make everybody happy.

Most of the people who are voting No seem to be "FUCK THE ENGLISH!" rather than actually doing it because they grasp the politics. I don't claim to be an expert but- yeah. It does seem like the majority have more sense though. Phew.

I've never met a one of these supposed "Fuck the English!" Scots. I know it is a common stereotype, but I don't think it is the reality at all. Many Scots are part English, most have contact with England through families or work on a daily basis. We're really not that different, and most Scots recognise it. Once again, it isn't a matter of "Fuck the English!" so much as it is a matter of "Fuck Westminster!"

Yeah. I have many scottish friends (Who are awesome) none of them want it!

I think the English, Welsh and Scots are all pissed off with Westminster if honest.

I would love to see some kind of revolution of the people!

Though, that would most likely remove the royals, which I love. So also don't want it. but yes, our political situation needs sorting out. And we should do that unified rather than splintered.

Does Scootland have enough of a diversified industry and infrastructure to be a major economic player on its own, or would it basically be like Ireland and just further mooch off the EU?

I think the united United Kingdom looks cooler on a map, I dig the history behind the merge, and I like to make fun of Braveheart for failing in the longterm. Is that enough justification for me, a Texan who won't be affected by this whatsoever, to vote?

I have limited knowledge on the matter but from what I know they plan to get most of their wealth from the oil and gas in the North Sea. Which hasn't even been touched with a barge pole yet.

The entire thing just reads like Salmond trying to pull one over on Dishface Cameron. I think what annoys me about the entire thing, is that they (the SNP) want independence but with the benefits they get with the Union; the british pound stirling, jobs provided by the BAE etc.

Westminster tends to act like Scotland is a giant drain and a bit of a pain in the ass which is partly what started it all, well, that and nothing existing beyond London.

I don't think independence will happen, I don't want it to happen either.

Scotland has a diversified and well-developed manufacturing industry, along with banking, and oil and gas, but most of it is dependent on contacts with lower Great Britain. Mr Salmond, as others are saying, essentially wants to continue those economic ties, but sever all political links. This is his stupidity, and would harm both England and Scotland. I understand that desire for political independence from Westminster (and I'm sure many in England understand this desire as well), but it isn't necessary to do it through secession. Obviously, a federal UK should be in the works. Mr Cameron has already promised fiscal devolution in the event that Scots vote to remain in the UK.

It is really quite sad that there isn't an English parliament.

They shall be given a warm welcome into the Nordics.

A Scandinavian Empire in the 21'th century would be awesome.

Welcome to the United Kingdom.

The english, welsh and scottish hate each other.

As brits we are all united and share a lot of history, good and bad. We've been through a lot together.

Basically, we like to whinge and complain about each other but we come together to unite to whinge and complain about other people. Like the frogs.
