Default Blizzard Devs "Considering" WarCraft 4 for their next RTS

At Gamescom, the Starcraft 2 developers were asked what they would do after Legacy of the Void ships. Their answer should excite everyone here:

Itís very rewarding for us to hear that thereís demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once weíre done with Void I think weíll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next. Thereís no question, though, that weíll consider Warcraft, StarCraft, or even new ideas. Anything is possible.

They also elaborated on what was meant by LotV being the "last Starcraft game" mentioned at Blizzcon 2014:

This isnít the end of StarCraft, but itís the end of this story for these characters. We donít have any specific plans, but Iíll say that the universe has so much potential for more stories, clearly other stories could be told.

How likely do you think Warcraft 4 would be though?

The "a new Starcraft game wouldn't feature any existing characters" sounding comment suggests they're burnt out on Starcraft, so I'd say Warcraft or, as they also mentioned, a new franchise are good possibilities.

I'm afraid.

What if they make Warcraft 4 and the story sucks?

They'll probably focus on historic events instead of the future. Campaigns set in different time periods for different races. Troll wars for humans and elves, with dwarves shoved in. Mmmaybe a dwarven campaign but I doubt it. Highborne campaign. And about 3-4 orc campaigns.

If they're not killing WoW then it would make sense to set WC4 in the past. But I think it will be about a specific period and conflict, not a collection of entirely different campaigns.

At any rate, setting it in the past will decrease the chance of sucking. Which is still high, given WoW and SC2.

Orb of Lightning

I don't like their talk of Starcraft's potential. They've already more than demonstrated they don't know what the fuck they're doing there.

I think they should just treat the WoW story/timeline and RTS story/timeline as separate things.

Yup.

And I really hope they don't do prequels. Those usually turn out pretty badly.

Talking

Wouldn't it be funny if they remade Warcraft I, II and maybe III to fit the current "Orcs are noble, misunderstood warriors who are always being oppressed by the racist humies" narrative?

Crossed Swords (War2)

As for what the story could be I think there's lots of possibilities.

While I wouldn't want the story to be in the same timeline of WoW I do think you could take a lot of the highlights of WoW and have those fit in to the RTS style. Also, I think a break from the Legion would be nice. Maybe have the primary antagonists be the Old Gods.

Like what if you had a Dwarf campaign. It could follow Brann or Magni. The first level could introduce you to the Bronzebeards and have them retaking Uldum from the Dark Irons. Then they find out about Ulduar and head to Northrend. There they could fight the Scourge a little, find the Frost Dwarves and Muradin, capture Ulduar, and accidentally release Yogg Saron. Message than comes to Brann and Muradin that the Dark Irons have attacked Dun Morogh and they head back to Ironforge. Magni gets Diamondized, and then Muradin and Brann attack BRM and fight Ragnaros, and then establish the Council of Three Hammers.

I don't think ditching the entirety of WoW story is going to happen. It's the same company; it's unlikely that they'll disown their own efforts. Besides, WoW is more popular than WCIII was; they'll want to exploit the popularity and fame of WoW, were they to make another RTS.

Besides, given SC2, I don't trust them to do a good job even if we start right after TFT anyway.

I'm not ecstatic about this. For one, I suck at RTS's. For another reason, where would a Warcraft IV even fit, storywise? Are they just going to make the (more popular) WoW non-canon? Would it take place 300 years into the future?

An RTS adaptation of WoW is another possibility (something like what Erthad suggested). Get to play as Varian and Garrosh today!

Warcraft 4 is going to take place in another AU. Sooner or later, the WoWverse, Movieverse, and Warcraft 4-verse are going to collide

I don't think they'll be replacing the WoW story if they did a WarCraft 4. It could be in a distant area away from the players. They already make book and online only stories.

A 'fill-in-the-gaps' story might also be possible. The story of Kael'thas between TFT and TBC, of Alleria and Turalyon between BtDP and Legion, etc.

What about Titans vs. Old Gods?

That seems more fitting as the mythological setting of the world, rather than something you experience first hand.

Guys I get your dissatisfaction but there is no need to be this jaded, we have 5000% more chance of getting Warcraft bloody IV, that has to be a little awesome.

Well, despite some missteps, SC2's story is well presented, the game is fun to play and very polished, it's packed full of interesting background lore/unit info that we all love and in general the story is solid enough. It's 10x better than WoW's story, and if we get that for WC4, I'd be happy enough.
Just remember, the campaign is a dedicated single player story mode, that alone means the story will be given much more effort, if nothing else.

This would be the best solution, leave the WoW crowd happy with their toy and give us what we've been waiting for.

After this option my next best would be a big time skip into the future (so as to give WoW a wide berth and get away from its crap) and far, far at the end is make it happen in the past, which I would likely hate.
