1. General changes

Since the original implementation of Outland about 4 years have passed ingame. That is why I changed some of the encountered foes in a radical manner. Prepare to visit an Outland with only a few demons left and almost no blood elves.
Characterwise I did not bring back any heroes which are gone in lore and only one former minor character gets a "resurrection". Illidan stays dead.

1.1 Timetable

Year 0:
* Reopening of the Dark Portal
* Alliance and Horde arrive in Outland

1:
* Illidan and Kael'thas are killed
* Kil'jaeden is banished
* Lichking awakens in Northrend

2:
* Draenai immigrate to Outland accompanied by a large military force since their deployment to Northrend gets delayed by scourge agents
* most Mag'har leave for Azeroth
* Forge Base Gehenna - the last legion stronghold of Outland - is destroyed
* War in Northrend begins

3:
* Stromgarde refugees arrive at Hellfire Peninsula
* Maiev Shadowsong takes command of Night Elven forces in Outland
* horrified by the acts of their brethren at the Wrath Gate the Forsaken members of the expedition to Outland break away from their traditional methods
* Troll settlements in Nagrand and Terokkar Forest expand
* Lich King is defeated

4:
* Escalation between Horde and Alliance mounts up
* The Naaru leave Outland to bring the light of hope to other battlegrounds
* High Overlord Saurfang retires to Nagrand
* High Priestess Ishanah calls for purification of Outland
* Aldor forces take control of Shattrath
* Shadowmoon Valley is sealed off by the Priests of Karabor

5:
* Cataclysm in Azeroth occurs
* Most Alliance and Horde forces leave for Azeroth
* Skettis civil war breaks out
* Dark Conclave and Wyrmcult join the Twilight Hammer
* High Priestess Ishanah declares war on orc filth and Forsaken scum

------------

1.2 Factions

There are large gameplay differences between the factions and you may choose between these factions for each zone anew. Each side got three factions with unique storylines for each zone but with large differences in the number of quests.

I Alliance factions:

A: The Aldor
Faction overview: The Aldor of today are a church militant lead by the High Priestes Ishanah on a crusade to wipe out the so-called enemies of light - the Horde. Gone are their caring and thoughtful manners. The Aldor are a bunch of fanatics and they are the most numerous and resourceful of the Alliance factions
Faction gameplay: Since there are more of them than from any other race in Outland, the Aldor draenai get more sidequests and minor storyplots similar to the original Outland experience. In addition they got most of the Alliance side pvp quests.
Architecture: Outland draenai temple style

B: Stromgarde Exiles: A federation of humans and high elves in memory of the human nation of Arathor and the fallen kindom of Stromgare these survivors rally around King Danath Trollbane. The Exiles are torn between returning to Azeroth and building a new home in Outland.
Faction gameplay: Streamlined storyline like in most of the new old zones. While the Aldor are on the forefront in the war against the Horde the Stromgarde Exiles see little fighting and more quests dealing with building refuges or eploiting ressources.
Architecture: mixture of high elven architecture and roman styled buildings(suggested new look for Arathi/Strom)

C: Wardens of Outland: A night elven army led by Maiev Shadowsong which fights for most of the time against the Dark Conclave and the Wyrmcult but also against the Ghost Hunter faction which competes directly with the Wardens for neutral faction recruting.
Faction gameplay: A mix of Alliance and neutral quests which count both for the faction reputation. Appears in most of the instances and raids as the primary Alliance faction.
Architecture: night elven architecture

II Horde factions:

A: The Blood Guard:
Following the draenai aggression the remaining orcs of Outland found themselves loosing ground ever since. High Overlord Saurfang has taken the mantle of leadership once more but his spirit is failing as the Blood Guard does not have the numbers or ressources to withstand the Draenai alone. The spirits still are vary of the orcs and do not awnser their calls most of the time.
Faction gameplay: Streamlined storyline which deals most with getting other Horde and neutral factions to help with defense and restoring the spiritual link with the land.
Architecture: Maghar architecture

B: Marshwalkers:
Trolls may adapt to every environment and so long they do not fight among themselves they pose an ever incresing threat to any enemy. That is why the Marshwalker faction is the most numerous of the Horde in Outland. Garrosh does not trust them much so they settled elsewhere. While there are not so many trolls as there are draenai the Marshwalkers are the main military Horde force in Outland.
Faction gameplay: Many sidequests and minor storylines like the original Outland leveling experience. Most deal with settling new places, delaying the Aldor crusade and helping the neutral factions of Ogri'la and Skettis to fight against the Dark Conclave and the Wyrmcult.
Architecture: Darkspear troll architecture

C: Ghost Hunters:
When Forsaken search for redemption and salvation they go crazy as the other Forsaken and everyone else in general will tell when hearing about the Ghost Hunters. This faction is made up of undertakers, spiritists and philosophers who are obsessed with the large number of spirits in Outland. They are religious, devout and they want nothing to do with the normal poison, slime, monstrosity and kill concept which the Forsaken deploy on Azeroth. Charismatic scholars and the will to deal with overlooked problems in Outland appeal to many neutral factions.
Faction gameplay: A mix of Horde and neutral quests which deal with moral and philosophy. Ghost Hunters appear in most raids and instances with a metaphysical agenda.

III Neutral factions:

Maghar and Thrallmar reputation -> Blood Guard reputation
Scryer/Aldor/Shatari/Kurenai Skyguard reputation -> Aldor and Marshwalker reputation
Honor Hold reputation -> Stromgarde Exiles reputation
Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation -> Wardens of Outland and Ghost Hunters reputation
Lower City reputation -> Skettis reputation

All other old factions stay

---------------------------
I will post the next chapter soon since I am not really happy with the changed map of Hellfire at the moment.

Sounds really good but I have a couple of questions:

The only Troll settlements in Outland that I am aware of are Zabra'jin and Swamprat Post in Zangarmarsh, what happened to them?

They were neutral in the Burning Crusade and offered their services to any Alliance or Horde members that opposed the Scryers.. how would you explain this change?

Swamprat Post has been destroyed by the Wardens of Outland. Zabra'jin is the Horde capital of Outland and half of it floats upon western Serpent Lake.

After the Naaru's departure most Scryers left for Quel'thalas. After Shadowmoon Valley has been sealed off by the Priests of Karabor High Pristess Ishanah had visions about a second Draenai slaughter by orcs in Outland and is encouraged by them to strike first.

2. Hellfire Peninsula

In the last 4 years Hellfire Peninsula saw much changes. The fel orcs were so decimated that they lost Hellfire Citadel twice - first to the Horde and Alliance, then to the Dark Conclave. Recently a desperate union of fel orcs, fel elves and the last demons captured the Citadel thanks to Alliance-Horde war and the redirection of the Dark Council's interest to the Skettis civil war.
While no one knows what evil plan the last remnants of the Burning Legion in Outland have in mind precious few care enough to even bother with it. Hellfire Peninsula is the second most important battlefield in the war of the Alliance vs the Horde and both sides aim at destroyind the reinforcement lines. They just do not fight over the Dark Portal itself since it takes considerable investment to keep it stable. Some of the caretakers at the Portal fear, sinister forces may redirect both portals onto other worlds but no one knows who is responsible for the sabotage.

2.1 Terrain change

- Hellfire Basin: flooded with the fel water of the Pools of Agonar
- Throne of Kil'jaeden: Captured by the Wardens of Outland and replanted - renamed as Throne of Rebirth
- Abyssal Shelf: Renamed Enchanted Shelf, southern part stalked by satyrs and populated by felwood like trees, north oasis with Marshwalker base
- Dark Portal: Terrain north cracked and crumbling; new Aldor Draenai temple in the south
- Expedition Armory: Taken over by the Ghost Hunters, northern part is the Ashen Expanse, where the ground is thickly covered with the ash of ritually cleansed and burnt bones of the draenai murdered in the first genozid and other restless souls
- Falcon Watch: Taken over by the Stromgarde Exiles and renamed Falcon's Fall
- Cenarion Post: abandoned grove that got out of control, corrupted by the Dark Conclave
- Spinebreaker Post: Abandoned by Nazgrel's command to bolster the defences of Thrallmar
- Ruins of Sha'naar: After the demons killed off the rebelling tribe they were destroyed by the Ghost Hunters who ritually cleansed the village

Travel Hubs:

- Stairs of Destiny: lacks a flight path, but one may fly from Nethergarde and Dreadmaul Hold through the portal, arriving players get a one time transport to the first quest hubs
- Thrallmar(Horde): only phase 1
- Honor Hold(Alliance)
- Temple of Telhamat(Alliance)
- Temple of Hatha(Alliance)
- Throne of Rebirth(Alliance)
- Falcon's Fall(Alliance)
- Pool of Fortune(Horde)
- Shrine of Memories(Horde)
- Mag'har Post(Horde)
- Mourning Ruins(Horde)
- Mira'jin(Horde): only phase 2

2.2 Storyline overview:

Each of the six factions has send an ambassador to the Stairs of Destiny and the initial quest introduces each of the three for your side. After that you choose one of them but you may later get back and choose another.

The Aldor: Vindicator Yaala welcomes and invites you to help the holy conquest of Outland by beginning your training as a member of the Aldor in the Temple of Hatha, the most secure place in all of Outland aside Shattrath. If you agree a Draenai mage opens a portal to the Temple and you get quite a few different quests to get through the training while helping other newcomers. At the end you get a matching Aldor themed equip in your amor class and are send to the Void Ridge to further practice your skills against fel elven void-enslavers.
After this you are ready to help with the main objective of the Aldor - the destruction of the Horde forces. In the end the destruction of Thrallmar is a success and you are promoted to lead the charge in the west against Mag'har Post and the Forsaken at the "defiled" Ruins of Sha'naar.
There are also half a dozen hidden quests which you may find if you explore a bit and a secondary storyline where you help a female draenai getting comfortable with her training as a mage.

Stromgarde Exiles: Arator the Redeemer welcomes you personally to the task of helping the refugees to build a secure haven in a broken and rugged land. Two griffins wait for you and you fly classic-style towards Honor Hold. Honor Hold has been repaired and expanded with an inner and an outer wall. In the inner wall several homes under construction are found which house the Exiles' civilians.
The quests deal with securing the reinforcement lines at Legion Front where the last remaining fel reavers of Outland are rooming and restealing supplies from Helfire Citadel and Zeth'Gor and scouting the way to Thrallmar so the Aldor may be succesful in destroying it.
Later you are send to Falcon's Fall which is populated by High Elves who seek to cleanse the fel waters below and hold back the Dark Conclave from Haal'eshi Gorge and Cenarion Post. Questing is straight forward with only two sidequests.

Wardens of Outland: General Maiev Shadowsong personally welcomes you to Outland since she heard of you deeds in Azeroth before. If you accept her proposal you are immediately promoted as a commander of the night elven forces in Hellfire and sent off in crow form to lead you troops. The quests are given as orders from the generals messengers or as suggestion from tactical advisors. You allways command a small group of rangers and druids while you deal with elite enemies as Marshwalker assassins or empowered satyrs in the Enchanted Shelf.
The main goal of the Wardens is to hinder the other Horde factions to help Thrallmar's defense. After Thrallmar's fall you lead the charge against the Dark Conclave and ultimately against the fel elves and orcs at the citadel. In some important areas scouts may offer you quests in which you reach alternate goals which grant you temporary extra buffs for the main storyline.

Blood Guard: An exhausted Tauren runner pledges for your help in the defence of Thrallmar. If you accept he buffs you with windwalk which allows you to run through Legion Front and the night elven patrols with unmatched speed. A desperate Nazgrel awaits you in a Thrallmar with much less forces then now. Even though he would like Thrallmar be rebuild like the bases in Northrend and Azeroth he does not have time, men and material for that. He even speculates if Thrallmar be evacuated if the situation gets out of hand. Fel elves, night elves and Aldor slaughter almost anyone moving outside and you have to do your best to stop them. Every quest got a timer which resets if you reach a safe spot but if you are outside in the open and it runs out you are ambushed by a night elven 65 elite scout force.
Your actions lead Nazgrel to the conclusion that you have rescued Thrallmar for the moment and he sends you away to Mag'har Post. After you arrive there you are informed by a seer that Thrallmar has been attacked just after you left and will inevitable fall. Thinking all those lives are lost you should strike against Telhamat while fortifying the Mag'har Grounds.

Marshwalkers: Witch Doctor Tor'gash has been exiled from Zangarmarsh for smoking unhealthy mushrooms and infesting the northern lakes with Murlocs but someone mad has assigned him to welcome you to the Marshwalker's cause. While all other factions send you right to your first base Tor'gash turns you into a frog and leaving you alone to roam the fel reaver infested Legion Front to search for a hex to lift your curse. You are then "adopted" by a fel reaver who allways dreamed of a frog pet(we learnt in Netherstorm that fel reaver have hearts). You and your fel reaver decimate the other jealous fel reavers and some puny fel elves who want to cook you for fun. Tor'gash then returns and turns you into fel boar which leaves the fel reaver so heartbroken he jumps from the cliffs into the nether.
After several other transformations you arive at the Pool of Furtune a hidden Troll outpost at the Abyssal shelf which looks to outsiders as lake with frogs and stags. There Chief Magash sends you on the mission to rescue as many Thrallmar citizens as possible since she got a vision after Tor'gash poisoned her with his mushrooms. As carrion birds you and Tor'gash arrive in Thrallmar just as Nazgrel and most Horde warriors are killed by the Aldor vindicators and manage to rescue many of the citizens by turning them into birds before they are found. During this Tor'gash gets shot and you lead the bird swarm west. Since Tor'gash's magic is failing you do not get fast and the frightend and exhausted citizens are forced to hide at the northern ramparts.
There you are found by some Marshwalker spies which are druids. They let you run some errands to built Mira'jin and create a freshwater lake nearby. After this the storyline is finished but many sidequests open up which deal with revenge, contact of lost family members and needs of the citizens.

Ghost Hunters: High Spiritist Mordiba is personally present to show you why you are already dead. As a ghost you fly with her through the spirit realm towards the Shrine of Memory. There you arrive to witness a scene with the ambassador of the dark lady who is confused about the Ghost Hunters' philosophy. While the ambassador is dressed in a dark uniform all Ghost Hunters wear lang white robes and the place is enlightened by several sacred fires in which bones are burnt to ash. You learn that these are the bones of the many victims of the unjust wars of the past and that the Ghost Hunter wish to put all the angry spirits to rest. Since the war broke out anew in Outland they will have to defend themselves but not by commiting atrocities. If they have to kill someone it is to be fast and clean - and they will even put their spirits with ceremonies to rest.
At the shrine even spiritual advisors from other races are present: Tauren druids, Arakkoa shamans and Etheral soul technicans which all discuss the phenomen of ghosts. You are then send to the Path of Glory to put enranged ghosts to rest by ritual burning their bones. Much later the western outpost of the Mourning Ruins is attacked by Aldor and Warden forces but pushed back by thankful ghosts which do so as a last service before finding peace.

2.3 Dungeons

* Hellfire Ramparts: The fel orc quarter of the Citadel. The fights stay the same but the orcs are not Illidari aligned anymore.
* Fel Furnace: The fel elf quarter of the Citadel. As Magtheridon's Lair is now filled with fel waters the fel elves experiment with it as weapon against their enemies. You are sent inside to stop them.
* Shattered Halls: Houses the Legion Command of Outland. Bosses stay the same except the last boss. Instead you fight against a fel orc bezerker and a fel elf rogue.

2.4 Options and Opinion

In my opinion Hellfire Peninsula was the hardest to redesign. It should stay mostly true to its name while be compelling enough to make questing a refreshing experience. I am not sure that I did succeed but I did not want to spoil every little quest I thought of.

I don't know what to say about that whole thing with the Aldor other than the fact i don't like it. Sorry about that.

Changes do never please everyone. But there is a reason behind the somewhat "crazy" behavior that is revealed in Shadowmoon Valley. After that the Aldor get back to normal.

Some note on storylines and level ranges:

58-62: Hellfire Peninsula - introduction to the factions
60-64: Zangarmarsh and Terokkar Forest - introduction of Dark Conclave plot and Skettis civil war
62-66: Nagrand and Blade's Edge Mountains - the first sees the culmination of the Aldor crusade, the second introduces the Ethereum plotline and features the Ogri'la-Wyrmcult war
64-69: Shadowmoon Valley and Netherstorm - the former reveals the reason behind the madness in Outland and what happened to the priesthood of Karabor while the latter shows how petty faction conflicts nearly lead to the triumph of an evil faction
Raids: Culmination of Outland storylines
