Lumber (War3) The Charity and Hope Thread

Thought with all the negativity lately this might be a good time for this thread, and for emergencies or natural disasters later on down the line, would be good to have a ready list of active, trustworthy charities.

Veterans Day, or Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, commemorates the end of World War I: a day the world hoped to bring our soldiers home for good. But the War to End All Wars was failed by a peace that only brought more conflict. Today we honor our troops worldwide and come together with War Child's Armistice Campaign, where gamers can lay down their arms to raise money for children affected by war. Art by Allison Theus!

I find myself very charitable.

For starters I'm polite and kind to ugly people, which I'm sure they don't get to experience very often. And this one time I actually bought a sammich for a bum at 7/11, which is pretty overpriced. And sometimes I throw coins at them. And give them cigarettes to help them die faster. And then there's my monthly subscription of shallow, fake karma, courtesy of the Red Cross.

Habitat for Humanity is an interesting charity because you get to build a house and get a free meal. I got to paint and do electrical wiring for lighting. I already knew how to do both of those but for someone who doesn't it is a good way to pick up skills that you could put on a resume(and volunteering always looks good on a resume.) Some of the guys got to put shingles on a roof or put concrete support into the ground.

Really easy ways to help out and help out a lot is the bone marrow register. Anyone can get into contact with an organization and set up a booth to register other people(I recommend a gym) or you can just register yourself. When I did it I just had to fill out some ancestry information and put my saliva on a cotton swab and send it in. I was contacted about it once and they got additional blood samples (which the charity paid for) and I was a match for a patient but they never ended up calling back to be a donor. They would pay to fly you out to Washington DC and either take your stem cells from your blood to produce bone marrow over the course of a few weeks or put you under to drill you. The later was rare but the former is a lot more common.

This one is fairly easy as well. All you have to do is donate stuff and they will sell it. I use to thought it was only good for selling cheap goods to poor people but Good Will actually offers job training programs so it is even better. You are going to help the impoverished for a life time instead of just the moment.

This is a charity that supporters wounded veterans. When I raised money for them I had to go around and ask a bunch of people to sponsor me to pledge X amount of money when ever I ran a quarter mile around a track. Then when the event came around all I had to do was run for 30 minutes. Even when people only pledge a $1 each you can raise a reasonable amount of money in such a short period. If you are someone that already likes to run why not run with a group and for a cause?

This is one I am personally familiar with. When my father died and I was overseas they personally paid for my plane ticket to fly home so I could go to the funeral. Buying a plane ticket to fly that distant on such short notice would have been crippling to my finances based off of the kind of income I was making. They also do a lot of disaster relief and offer first aid training programs. I already know first aid from being a veteran but at some point in the future I would like to become a certified First Aid instructor for family, friends, and even co-workers in the future because knowing these things can save a life.

I have done this multiple times. You spend a few hours out in nature either cleaning or planting trees. They give you gloves and a shovel and you can pick up a lot of garbage and dig holes to put trees in.

https://secure.humanesociety.org
This is where I bought my cat. The shelters are staffed by volunteers so if you love animals or want access to a bunch of animals to play with this is a good charity to get involved into.

There is actually multiple charity where you get to take care of puppies that are being trained to become guide dogs. I have only heard of this one but the charity basically needs people to foster puppies for about 18 months until they are old enough to be guides for the blind and disabled. You can help a lot of people out when all you have to do is raise a puppy.

Habitat for Humanity also has the ReStore volunteer option. The charity supports itself by selling donated furniture and goods. Sign up for this, and you'll help out at one of the ReStore locations. I did this a few times last year.

A list of charities due to the month that it is.

Remember to vet your charities folks, a lot of big ones like Susan G Komen are just scams.
