The movie is pretty clear on the usage of lies and what's most interesting is the marketing strategies.

Don't be so optimistic. There won't be a definite doomsday hour upon which our collective evil culminates in the destruction of the human race. Our fate is not so beautiful. We're going to keep fucking each other over for centuries.

I would be suspicious of any overly pro-western politicians in Russia, they would probably sell out and ruin the country like Yeltsin did.

All in all Putin does a good enough job. He has wiped out many of the oligarchs, he propped up a few ofc but is that entirely corruption or just the way the game has to be played in Russia for the time being. He is a capable man and probably the best Russia can realistically hope for.

I love Russia, I wish things were better for them but such is the way the potato crumbles.

He's got a point, to be fair.

Russia has been extremely corrupt since pretty much forever; a totalitarian state with little to no freedoms since the middle ages pretty much. And Putin, while I'm no fan of him or his cult of personality, nor his international aggressions, has done a whole lot of good for the country. He pretty much is the best the people could hope for, seeing how he was able to stabilize and stimulate the Russian economy to grow during his (rather lengthy and on-going) reign, after decades of decline.

Could Russia and her people do with a little bit of freedom of speech and all that? Absolutely. But it's going take time. A long, long time. Or it will be very quick and bloody. Either option is a pickle in its own right.

In other news; are we getting a sequel to Tiananmen Square Massacre set in Hong Kong? China mobilizing their army against their people is a bit of a flashback.

I hope Hong Kong is okay. I like the idea of a free China that it sort of kind of represents I guess?

It sucks a lot but we knew this was coming since the 90s turnover. Hong Kong is now China again and ofc China will want to assert its laws and dominance over it. The only reason it did not happen before was because China was trying to seem nice and harmless, but now the dragon is ready to show teeth. Partly because they have grown stronger and feel it is time to flex their muscles but partly because the "China just makes cheap stuff for you kawaii" facade isn't holding up these days.

What's this I hear about the vast majority of the fires in the Amazon being started by people down there?
After all of Ballsnero's posturing about how the Amazon should be used to make money at its expense, it seems businesses are burning down the rainforest. Rightists worldwide have lost their fucking minds and they're going to kill us all. At least we're lucky that the natural forest fires are down at the moment.

I have a cousin who worked as a lawyer over there.

The info I have (8 years-ish old) is that non-profit organizations and natives were indeed laying trees down and putting fires.

But I also know that people from the government were the ones allowing big corporations to set foot there.

In the Amazon's specific case, both the government (even the current one) and the opposition have their hands pitch-black dirty. They've had for years now.

What made brazillians suddenly care and go crazy about it?

A black cloud over the city of São Paulo which made the day turn into night.

There all kinds of natives in Brazil.

There are those consumed by corruption, and there are those true to their roots.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/23/w...eInSection_AMP

According to NY Times, deforestation is a constant issue with Brazil because their economy has a lot of agriculture. Their recent efforts to cut back on it brought massive recession. The NY Times speculates that Bolsonaro's election has emboldened farmers this year to cut down more, and now the government isn't able/willing to control the resulting fires.

The article also says the number of Amazon fires this year is roughly comparable to 2016. Maybe that should make us MORE worried?

EDIT: Emboldened farmers could EASILY include indigenous people amongst their racial makeup. Because people are people, and people live.

It is almost certainly true that the indigenous peoples of the region do not have the luxury of lofty ideals concerned with the long term salvation of their ecosystem's biodiversity.

Well most of Europe and a lot of NA has been clear cut too, us showing up now and wagging our finger at them is more than a bit hypocritical. Ofc no one is suggesting we send some kind of stipend to Brazil to preserve the rainforest despite economic reasons not to, that costs money.

Also it is funny how almost no one in the West cared about the massive, smoke clouds bigger than Europe, forest fires that happened in Russia recently.

1. I... don't think it's Hypocrisy because no one's saying it was 'good' when Europe was clear cut, that was bad too.

2. And... no one's talking about it because this is probably the first they've heard of it. If you want to say it's bad people are not talking about something you kind of have to at least try to bring it up first
