Default The 2016 NFL Thread

The 2016 season has officially started.

Manning has retired.

RG3 was cut.

The Eagles traded DeMarco Murray (man, the Chip Kelly experiment was a real winner... good luck, Niners...)

Free agency starts this week.

So, does Osweiler stay in Denver, or does someone else overpay him?

Someone else will overpay for him and you have a lot of teams lined up for him.

The question is if Denver is really serious about keeping him, or if, as been rumored, they are more interested in a QB like Fitzpatrick to be a bridge.

And the Eagles moved Bryon Maxwell to Miami for draft picks, after signing him to a big contract. Which just proved what everyone thought except for the Eagles- Maxwell is a good player, but when you are playing in one of the best secondaries in football it allows the big flaws that he has to be covered up.

I really wonder just how good Murray is going to be with the Titans? On paper it looks like a real good deal for them, but with that coach? ugh

As for the Broncos... can their defense carry them to the playoffs? Cause their offense certainly isn't going to. It's like the 2000 Ravens all over again.

Farewell Dougernaut, RIP Buccaneers running game.

I hear Denver offered Brock $15/yr for 3yrs. That's good money for him.

Some fool team might throw $20 at him. Anything less than that, and I think he has enough sense to stay where he can win.

The Eagles are blowing up everything Chip Kelly did.

The more I think about it, the more I think Denver is pretty screwed.

Osweiler was a lot more pissed than they gave him credit for, and they went in with a low offer. I don't blame him. Brock was winning games mid-season and was clearly the future of the franchise. New England handled it right when Brady overtook Bledsoe. And Bledsoe played a few more years.

Denver really fucked up. They knew there was nothing but garbage in free agency, and they knew there wasn't a QB ready to play at a high level in the draft this year (not that they draft high enough to get one if there was). They should have locked down Brock earlier, and, more importantly, they should have let him play in the playoffs. He earned it with the win against the Patriots.

Now they're going to settle for Fitzpatrick, or maybe Kaepernick. Honestly, neither of those is a good idea - the cost will be too high.

If they're smart, they'll offer a 2-year deal to a guy with huge upside and a lot to prove - RG3.

Yes, he's been injury-prone. He was also rookie of the year and a pro bowler when he came out. He has huge upside. And a huge chip on his shoulder.

They could get him on a reasonable, short-term, incentive-laden deal, and reduce their risk.

But I don't know if Elway is smart enough to make it happen. Not after his ego got in the way of how he handled Osweiler.

Signing RG3.

Being smart.

You can only choose one of these.

Of the available free agent options, please make your case for ANY of them being a better choice than RG3.

I will gladly present the statistical data to destroy your argument, should you care to engage.

A cheerleader that won't get injured within a week is a better QB than RG3 sitting on the bench.

Even in his "worst" year he played in 9 games, started 7. 15 his first year, 13 his second.

Fitzpatrick, the only more "durable" veteran free agent available, is statistically inferior in every other category, and is 33 years old. He'll be on his 5th team in 5 years wherever he signs next. Do you really think he has any upside left?

RG3 is still only 26, and can probably be had at half the price. The only thing that makes him injury "prone" is if you go back to making him a running QB, which isn't Kubiak's style anyway.

I just think you take the bullet, and look forward to the draft or FA next year. It's fine if RG3 is willing to take peanuts, but there's no way in hades I'd invest much for someone that injury prone in that position.

In other news, Lovie Smith thinks he's Tony Dungie!

Denver is drafting dead last. They're not getting a franchise QB this year, so, either they tank hard, draft high next year, and pray, or they find someone to keep them relevant for a few years while they still have playoff-caliber talent on the roster.

I do think RG3 will sign a fair deal - because it's already day 3 of open free agency, and he's still out there. Nobody is throwing ludicrous money at him - he's going to have to take a modest contract, and if he's going to do that, why wouldn't he do it someplace he can succeed?

Denver is a perfect fit. He needs a second chance, and he needs it to count. If he goes to LA or SF, he's going to be setting himself up for failure, again.

Houston would have been perfect. But they took Osweiler. The only other option at this point is for him to sign a *really* small deal as someone's backup. And I don't see that happening, either.

I suppose, maybe, the Jets are a possibility. But that just seems like a bad idea.

Like you've suggested, the franchise QB isn't out there anymore for Denver. At best, you get a re-tread and hope he turns into Carson Palmer (and, don't think for a second the Cardinals aren't looking to the future either - they know Palmer is not only fragile, but clearly not a clutch playoff QB).

Kaepernick doesn't make any sense to me - SF will want compensation, and Denver needs their draft picks pretty bad right now. Fitzpatrick is all kinds of old. He's not a bad fit - but what I hear is he's holding out for a bigger contract - which is smart, because this one is probably his last one.

At least we can both agree that Kaepernick would be a horrible choice. They could sign RG3 I guess, if his deal was fair, it's not like they won the SB with superb QB play.

I was also just reading about the Broncos and Mike Glennon. I doubt that would be a thing because he's a really good player and we'd want a lot for him. But I wish it would happen, Glennon deserves to play somewhere.

I think Dallas proved that it's stupid to roll into a season without a dependable backup. Unless they happen to draft someone they really like, they're going to keep Glennon.

EDIT...

Wow, I'm hearing Denver just sent Philly a conditional 7th rounder in 2017 for Mark Sanchez....

Didn't see that one coming. Elway must know something the rest of us don't...

Well that'd be nuts, and as for Glennon, I feel like shit keeping him where he's at, because given the chance he showed he can do very well. It's like, I'm glad he's a Buc, but that kid deserves a real shot, not constantly butt fucked by the revolve door at HC the Bucs have.

Also.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Somebody get John Elway on some medication, quick.

The defending Super Bowl Champions are going to feature a QB competition between Sanchez and Kaepernick.

Meanwhile, Tebow and RG3 can't get an offer.

What a time to be alive...

Huge trade. Gotta call this a win for the Cardinals, if they can re-sign Jones.

Cooper has been a bust.

Now when Bolvar takes his Younglings to a Skins game, he will be able to let them play in the beach/moat outside the stadium.

Maybe the Redskins should consider the fact that they haven't really been any good since they left RFK...

I wish they'd design a new park with that in mind.
