Fallout is awesome. Recently finished New Vegas, and found it to be much better then 3. Haven't played the older Fallout games though.

Fallout 3 is still the best by a mile.

First you say Assassin's Creed 1 is the best, now Fallout 3, wow... next you're going to tell me Mass Effect 3 was the greatest in the series and its ending was perfect.

It spawned Mothership Zeta. Fuck that DLC. Aliens a shit. The nukes being launched by them rather than humans fucking up is fucking stupid.

Also it doesn't have Joshua GOAT Graham.

Let us be fair. There were plot holes, but keeping the water purifier out of Enclave hands was not one of them. There should have been an option to side with them, but since the game assumed for you that they were bad and you were against them there was no reason to let them have it. That is not a hole, that is just a missed opportunity for moral ambiguity, something that Fallout 3 hates (except in The Pitt).

Going along with Eden's omnicide... including yourself... was because your character was a dick?

The ending stupidity was OMG YOU HAVE TO SACRIFICE. THEMES LOLOL.

The biggest plot hole I remember is Vault 87, the home of the super mutants. It has no working entrance, yet super mutants are able to flood out of it and the Enclave was able to get in after you without stopping to kill Little Lamplight. You never see the super mutants working on anything (though they are almost out of FEV, so they may just be stalled) in the extremely small lab they they all came from. Also, why was the GECK stored in a maze? That area looked nothing like labs.

This thread didn't stick around long, understandable given it's a niche subject matter, but I did have higher hopes for it.

I'm going to revamp the OP at some point to act as a mini-everything-Fallout, with links to guides/information, and so on.

I'll also start posting some Fallout-discussion posts in the future, hopefully sparking some debates/conversations, if only because I enjoy the setting immensely and would like to hear more what other posters think. (We had a good Fallout-diversion discussion in the Vidya thread awhile back, and it was awesome.)

A Fallout thread and no Vault Boy in sight? I'm shocked.

The first fallout is still one of my favorites.

I slightly prefer Fallout 3 over New Vegas. With radiation and ruins everywhere, especially in D.C. proper, it feels more true to the setting then NV. Let's face it, the Vegas area is pretty much the garden spot of the Fallout world. Barely any nukes hit, thanks to House.
The writing is superior to Fo3, I'll give it that, but I can't shake the feeling that NV feels more Mad Max-ish than FO-ish.
And even Mad Max had less civilization around. There's just way too much of that in NV.
I mean, it makes sense for civilization to reform after 200 years, but that kinda takes the post-apocalyptic atmosphere out of it.

God no, there's been a nuclear apocalypse and that's all you really need to known going into any of the Fallout games.

The first two games take place in the west (former Arizona and Nevada mainly), while FO3 takes place in Washington D.C.
While having played the first two will make you aquainted with some of the factions from FO3, it isn't required.

In fact, being thrown into this world without any knowledge about the outside is better, imho, because this is exactly what happens to your character.

What Sarah and Spidey said.

Although the only other thing to mention is the Fallout setting is a 1950s-esque American Sci-Fi mixed with equal 1950s Cold War paranoia. The technology is, even though in "the future" a very weird mix by our 2010s standards.

It's great, don't get me wrong, but it's not what everyone expects.

The tech is mainly focused on nuclear energy (cars and the like run on it) and - if I have it right - I don't think the transistor was developed so electronics are generally large and bulky.

HOWEVER. I wouldn't play Fallout 3 after 1/2/New Vegas if you're a lore addict, you'll be able to pick it apart with a little ease.
