Yup, though it seems to be having some technical difficulties.

The comics, while by all accounts absolutely awesome, seem to be of questionable canon to the main show. Which is a damn shame, because I liked the idea of Twilight's mother being the writer of Daring Do, amongst some of the other things they've apparently done.

As far as I know, the daring do thing is only ever vaguely hinted at, so it's not really a contradiction. Otherwise, it fits canon rather well, and actually works well with the show (explaining where Chrysalis went, setting up that Nightmare Moon was outside corruption, Luna handling later celebrations, summer wrap-up). Considering the annual was a prequel to the movie, I'd call it 'clear canon'. Note that I'm only talking about the main series though. The micro-series has a lot more issues.

That said, there are some notable differences in tone. The comics are quite a bit sillier, and notably oriented at the older demographic. Issue 10's even got a cover with all the brony-embraced background chars.

Another issue has him with one of those watches in which you store your identity. Apparently, Derpy is a companion.

Edit: also, since you like Vinyl, here is her getting her cutie mark:

The context is four geeks (including young Shining Armor) pulling epic rock music. I think the brown-haired one is a big sister, since it's a high school thing.

You forgot to mention the gerbillions cameo's and references.

Are you aware that Shining Armor is a massive nerd, plays Ogres and Oubliettes (as a Paladin, while Twilight sometimes plays too with her Unicorn sorcerer), as well as a couple rounds of Hocus-Pocus the Get-Together every now and then?

But nothing beats Stoner Pony (Rarity special).

Anyway, the comic is clearly aimed at the bronies more than the kids themselves, you should really consider having a look.

See, I think a lot of the stuff shown in the comics has been, to some extent, born from the massive blob of stuff that is the show's fanon. For example, I had always been running on the assumption that the Nightmare was a separate entity, possibly as something created by Discord before his banishment, so the fact that it was a separate entity that possessed a Luna consumed by her own doubts was pretty cool. Likewise, some of the stuff from the Luna mini-comic (I only saw the first eight pages as a preview) looked fairly interesting, especially the idea of her being more militant in her duties to Equestria than Celestia (if only out of necessity; I doubt that she would have very many meetings in the dead of night).

Taking some of the best stuff from the fanon and some of their own ideas that won't get into the show? That's a good idea.

On a different subject, I have to admit that I'm hoping the Equestria Games will be like the Grand Galloping Gala during season one. I really want them to build up to it gradually, while also working towards the mystery of discovering what's inside the locked box. The Royal Canterlot Wedding, while a good finale for season two, really did come out of nowhere in the story.

You'd want to look at the main series from IDW.

Came out of nowhere, but I still enjoyed it. Although the pacing felt very... off.

I think there was some good idea with having Spike's status as a sidekick used to comment on his usual role in the show. However, the episode dedicated a lot, and I mean a lot, of its screentime to prolonged superhero antics, instead of on the character stuff that actually matters.

That alone would not make it my least favorite episode. It'd be more like Equestria Girls; concept that wasn't a good idea, but DAMN do the writers try hard to make it work. What ruined it for me though was at the end, when they revealed what happened. These are my problems:
-I'm pretty sure that magic isn't supposed to work like this. Spike is incapable of spell-casting, so I don't think he could have activated the spell to begin with.
-If the book was actually intended to be used like this, why was it hidden in tiny text?
-If this was a book you were intended to literally get sucked into, why did it start at a random point in the story?
-So, making six people awesome superheroes and one person a useless sidekick was the intended function? That's rather unfair. Spike was the first to get sucked in, so it's not like he only got the role because there were too many people to begin with.
-It seriously stretches believe that they just happened to have ponies to fit all the roles. What would have happened if a single more person had been sucked in? Or a person less?
-It's pretty damn clear that the ponies feel pain throughout this. Who the hell gives a kid a comic book that makes him feel like he's being smashed into the wall by a super-villain?
-Really, books that suck you into alternate universes are minor magical items? You hand out the equivalent of a friggin' holodeck to little children?

And finally, most importantly:
-It undoes the entire point of the story. The idea was to show that Spike wasn't useless despite not being as powerful, both in the fantasy and in the real world. However, that reveal meant that he was the cause of all of this. Rather than making him not useless, it makes him worse than useless.

As a sidenote, the comic was also really anachronistic. I don't think we've had major comic books with long-term sidekicks that served almost exclusively as comic relief since, what? The early seventies? It's not something a lot of the target audience is going to connect to.

Rotal, your sig disturbs me.

Also, finished reading all the comics. Comic!Spike is the most glorious thing ever. Whenever the show makes him look clumsy, I shall now refer to the time he rode celestia into battle while wielding a trident and fighting off giant mutant cockatrices.

Well, at least you fixed the shape of the image. Much less disturbing this way.

Damnit i need to go back to the earlier version, then!
i fear it may be a tad bit too high - when the roulette ends i'm probably just use Pinkie as avatar and get humanized Vinyl Scratch back.

You know, it just struck me:
-My least favourite episode is 'power ponies' (episode that was kinda forgiveable due to good writing balancing it an iffy concept, but whose ending ruined it completely for me)
-Before that, it was 'Spike at your service' (episode that relied entirely on Spike's character being things, clumsy and knowledgeable about dragons, that he wasn't)
-Before that, it was 'MMMystery on the Friendship Express' (really, a 'who ate the cake?' mystery? Wasn't that the exact kinda thing this show wanted to avoid?)
-Before that, it was 'Owl's well that ends well' (really predictable)

Out of the four episodes I like the least, the only four episodes I just don't like, three are spike episodes. Despite me actually liking Spike. Anyone else have something similar?

Is it just me, or did the head get smaller?

Anyway, got around to reading the comics that came out this week. Pirate arc is still meh, though it was kinda cool that they re-introduced the sea-ponies (or, in this case, mermares).

The luna micro comic though? F-ing glorious to the 11th degree. Great personality work on Luna and Celestia, a nice bit of insight into the daily going-ons of the royalty and a ton of memorable things that made me giggle. Very good job on the artwork, with Luna and Celestia both being drawn very well and very varied (also, celestia with bed-hair). Also, it seems that Celestia's Trollestia tendencies have rubbed off on her subordinates.

Also, new mini-series coming out to replace the micro-series, starting in Januari.
