Default Blizzard is Making a "Microtransaction Strategy" Business Unit

Hopefully this relates more towards Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm than WoW.

The consensus on MMO-Champion is, as per the norm, extremely negative.

Blizzard is probably trying to move away from the subscription model for their newer games and trying to follow in the model of LoL. That might end up being the way we pay for video games in the future. I am not really happy about it. Having it just be cosmetic is better than pay to win but I like the cosmetic part of the game. I think it would be cooler to quest to find cool looking costumes rather than just fork out money to buy them. From a game development standpoint I think it also means that the company will focus more on micro transaction content than they will 'free' content.

Meh. Not having to pay for the game directly would be a boon at this point. I've seen a lot of people pay for those stupid helms, so really we are at this point already just also paying for it.

Why wouldn't they try to monetize their MOBA and Card Game? Micro transactions are pretty much the only way you are going to make money on either, as Heroes of Newerth proved when they flopped horribly in comparison to LoL. No real online example to compare Hearthstone that I can think of, however.

If it's for vanity items like Pets and Mounts in WoW? Fine. Even experience boosters are fine, as long as you aren't putting penalties on people who decide not to use it (other than the fact they don't have the EXP boost).

And all it takes is a tactically calculated "for the Horde" rallying the troops to make them all think "OMG she really does care!"

I don't really mind it, as I doubt that it'll involver power-ups, nor do I think that we'll see the end of subscriptions just yet.

Yeah in fairness (and I agree with you PJ) it doesn't matter if we like it or not, F2P/Microtransactions are becoming, if they're not already, the norm for Online gaming and I don't see that changing. Blizzard have to roll with the times.

However, while on the point of WoW, I will still never agree with their Pet/Mount/Helm bullshit while this is a Subscription-based game; that's just fucking greed. Either make it F2P and Microtransaction the shit out of it with cosmetics, or, make everything accesible to subscribers.

It only makes sense given Hearthstone and HotS (and the new focus on small teams possible pushing out other F2P games). It might bleed over into WoW some, especially in the asian regions, but I wouldn't be too concerned.

Hiring people to ask the question of how effective microtransactions would be in all their games isn't a bad move.

Of course, I don't have a problem with them offering vanity shit on the store for exorbitant prices. I don't need to buy it, and the fools who do buy it are just giving Blizzard more money that they can use to make content for the game. I'm all right with that.

Yes, Blizzard is so frugal and effective with the money they make. Expect much more content people, and quicker updates!

As long as they don't make WoW free to play, then I'm fine. I don't want to pay all those micro-transitions.

If the numbers are true, the sole shop for WoW earned 213.000.000$ in 2013, making WoW the 7th Free-to-play* (largely above SWTOR, which is the 8th). And yet, it also had subs...

*WoW is there only because of the shop.

Still not enough to drop the p2p. (luckily)

I hope WoW doesn't go over the top with microtransitions, I'm still not bothered with it now, so I want it to stay that way.
