Default What's your favorite WoW plot twist/reveal/development?

Self-explanatory title. I'm curious about what other people think.

Personally, I always liked the way that Kael'Thas' betrayal of Illidan was revealed... you're questing through Netherstorm, seeing that the Elves are having trouble controlling the manaforges (or whatever they're called), and then eventually you notice that there are a lot of legion forces around, and... they're working with the Blood Elves??

It's not only a major plot twist that obviously sets up for 2.4, but it was one that players are guided to pretty much discover on their own, rather than just having Kael show up and say "yeah fuck Illidan" in the middle of Area 52 or something. Oh, and it also doesn't feel like a complete asspull, which is always a plus.

Any other favorite moments?

Hour of the Forsaken/Wrathgate.

It was the first time we'd really been given a proper 'cutscene' using the engine in-game, the build up was excellent. The sudden Forsaken ambush did lead to a lot of "Huh? What? Are they-?" and the whole stuff about the Undercity being taken. After Vanilla/TBC of being in such a static world it was when phasing really hit home for me the first time.

That, and it was probably the first time a pretty important faction character (Bolvar) had died in front of us in WoW's time. Granted, "He becomes the Lich King" ruined that a lot but all signs did point to him being dead beside the dragon tongue glitch even Blizzard admitted was a bug.

I think Wrathgate would have impacted me more if I hadn't seen it on Youtube before I got WotLK.

I'm not sure what my favorite twist is, but the one that caught me most off guard was "But now we must see it with mortal eyes."

And I genuinely think the people who have absolutely nothing at all positive to say about the game and, the people whose posts are composed entirely of whining, really consider leaving (or at least sticking to non-WoW sections). Because if you truly get no enjoyment out of WoW, then why are you here?

With that said, goodbye.

The Alliance Onyxia quest chain.

C'Thun's reveal.

Loken's betrayal was very well-done, but with a name like Loken it was freaking obvious from the start.

The "Heart of Arthas" quest chain.

Pathaleon the Calculator. Dude felt like more of a villain than anyone else in TBC.

Moira not being mind controlled.

Deathwing if my head canon ever ends up being true.

Skids taps Megatron's Autobot badge.

Skids: Right. There. What does that badge even mean to you? How has wearing it forced you to modify your behaviour? I'm serious! How has being an Autobot in any way prevented you from doing exactly what you want? Because if the answer is "it hasn't"—then nothing you've said or done in the last six months counts for anything.

The Purge of Dalaran. Really. High elves kicking the blood elves out of the city? Priceless.

That Garrosh survives his trial.

Yeah really, it was quite unexpected for me.

Yeah, it almost makes you forget that Dalaran was supposed to be a mostly human city.

Troll guy in Grizzly who turns out to be a Lich King lackey, the whole scythe of elune questline in northrend, Gorgonna/Krena. So basically all of Grizzly Hills.

Geez, when you put it like that I'm left wondering why I hate the questing in that zone so much. Maybe it's just because I play Alliance.

Anyways, my favorites are:

The original Dark Riders storyline, specifically Jitters's story, the progression in Cata is alright.

The story of Stalvan Mistmantle.

The Defense of Stoneplow. Not much of a twist or reveal, but a great moment nonetheless that surprised me on a meta perspective with how effectively it got through to me.

The opening quest of Darkshore. Again, not really a "twist" per se, but surprisingly poignant for someone who leveled through the zone in vanilla (kinda sucks to think that most future players won't really feel the significance of those deaths).

Vanilla Duskwood was really good, even if it wasn't really "plot-twisty."

And Grizzly Hills is still my favorite zone in the game. ^_^ Mostly great questlines(aside from the dumb Budd ones), with gorgeous visuals and an amazing score.

Oh, here's another one.

Unleash Hell

Remember the awed, pleased, shock of Alliance players when this came up on the PTR? That maybe Blizzard were telling the truth, that the Alliance were actually... going to retaliate? That they'd get their payback? That they'd stop being defensive, stupid, fools?

Yeah, it lasted all of about five minutes... but, still, a lot of people I spoke to were floored. Purge of Dalaran to a lesser degree, but I feel much of that was overshadowed by A Little Patience and "Yus 'Igh Kang"

Freeing the goblin prisoners by attaching rockets to their cages and launching them into the stratosphere...

...as they beg you to please use the keys you've been collecting from the guards instead. But the keys are useless items; they're meant to be resold for change, of course!

That and the... kidnap baby naga to use them as hostages when it was the pygmies who were actually attacking us...

But the Naga were working for a faceless one so it's "Okay".
