Question Communism: Can It Work?

I swear if I see one more communism discussion I'm tying everyone to a subway bench.

Clearly it doesn't work, because Noitora will tie everyone to a subway bench.

Pissed off the wrong guy, so Communist equality kidnapped him from his home and buried him somewhere.

Yes, just not by following Marxist principles.
Even then why would you want to live in such a society which would (by necessity) be stuck to to a primitive existence?
Unless you're an anarcho-primitivist.

You see, comrade Hlaalu? With glorious leader Noitora in charge, we will all own the means of being tied to subway bench.

Elements of it in a democratic context, absolutely.
The total "takeover" of Marxist forces and complete change of society from capitalism into full-blown communism at gunpoint? No. Never has, never will.

And the minute people around here realize that discussing the merits of socialist policies and possible democratic utopian ideas has nothing to do with the latter, the discussions would stop.

I don't know fellow western Europeans, and privileged American students. Why don't you tell me whether we should try it again or not?

Why? I don't support communism, never have. People keep mixing that up with socialist policies and elements and apply it in broad strokes.

This Horde needs no more dismantling as it is.

As I've said before, the best way to something resembling communism will come through vastly improving production. When you are producing so much of all kinds of products (except maybe luxury ones or those that require rare materials) that the price of such an item is ridiculously cheap you might as well give it away for free. And then the good old "work as much as you want take what you need" becomes implicitly true.

Though getting there is not a certainty. It is quite possible that the divide between the rich and poor continues to grow and gets only worse from all this automation. With vast numbers of people having next to nothing, and no means to get money since virtually all jobs are automated.

This will certainly come when we develop artificial intelligence, but it can also come sooner through 3D printing and other advanced manufacturing methods (this includes nanotech) or even with slowly improving "dumb" robots that we have now.
Truth be told, a more equal society, built on the bones of current technology, could already happen today though not quite to communist levels. But our societies are far, far from perfect so...

You'd probably need a lot of society-wide mantling to make pure communism feasible.

Pure communism can never work, because it relies on the basic principles of growth just like capitalism does. It just assumes it can manage it in a socially more just way. Obviously that doesn't work with our current infrastructure and culture.

See what C9 said.

Having said that, unfettered anarcho-capitalism, which we have today, is the safest, best bet for a track straight into societal collapse and authoritarianism and conflict.

Nah, not in that way, but going back to the whole "People keep mixing that up with socialist policies and elements and apply it in broad strokes."

So here is your opportunity to explain! What are the differences, how are the end results different or the same?

You were talking about circus performing sea lions.

It's a song about a sea lion, and his circus performing girlfriend.
