Runes Brainstorm Game: Five Classes

Instead of using existing fantasy archetypes though, whip up five custom classes. These can be for an existing world you've had on the backburner that you flesh out, or something totally new, or for an existing setting (Dishonored, Super Mario Bros., Etc...) so long as you don't reuse existing classes or roles from that setting (As an example, if you use WoW or Diablo, you can't use demon-hunter) But feel free to tweak existing ones (Demonhunter --> Netherdancer or something).

Include a bit of information and background on the classes to give others an idea of how they work and how they came to be.

The goal is that the five together would make a viable dungeon party to tackle some dungeon/quest/whatever of your design in the setting they're native to.

Example format.

I'll have a more in depth example whipped up later this week.

Setting: Anondo

Mission: A journey into the lands of the dead to save a group of innocent civilians that were captured by Rakhoush.

Saurian Medium- By communing with the ghosts of ancient thunder lizards, the Saurian medium is able to bring for prehistoric rage and berserker fury. Adept Saurian Mediums can manifest claws and teeth of ancient thunder lizards. Transcendent Saurian Mediums are thunder lizards reborn.

Thunder Boxer- Using nascent electrical currents in the body and air. The Thunder boxer is able to channel electricity into his punches. Every blow he strikes rings like thunder.

Parasite- Abominations with lamprey like tentacles stretching out from their bodies. They have near instantaneous like regeneration. Should the parasite drill a tentacle into the cortex of its victim, it can create a psychic link and make the victim its slave.

Patriot- Driven by absolute jingoism. The patriot's jingoism manifests in the form of swords and shields in the shape of their country's flag. Should the patriot run out of bullets, his jingoism will make bullets out of raw psychic energy. The sound of the patriot's national anthem will increase his strength to point of defying the laws of physics.

Dream Crow- Adorning themselves in symbols of the crow and cloaks of black, the dream crow looks at his opponent without rage. He may burst into a group of actual crows or he may cast illusions. They can rip out souls and send them to the dimension of the crow. They travel into the realms of the dream and the lands of the dead. His greatest enemy is sunlight.

More details for each class to follow, if I find the time.
Tonal Architect: (Obviously inspired by the greatest of Dwemer artisans.) These mystics of the Dwarven Harmonium deal with the harmonic substance of energy at its most fundamental level, attuning to the natural creative and destructive frequencies of reality itself. These engineers most perfectly touch upon the praxis of the divine, and are capable both of singing new gods into existence and canceling the wave forms of those already extant.

Mirror Logician: (Obviously inspired by the Altmeri answer to the Dwemer's blasphemy.) These philosopher lords of the Kengwani Magisterium are trained to perceive the branching causeways of choice and consequence. It is said the truth is an unlit candle in a maze of mirrored glass, and these magi walk that maze without fear or doubt. Their mastery of the subtle forces of Destiny allows them to walk unmolested on accursed paths that lesser mortals rightly fear to tread.

Far Walker: Time is relative, but so too is 'space,' as outsiders falsely approximate the concept more properly known to the Eternal Bastion as eoa. Time explained to one without its ingrained understanding might be described as 'a thing which allows things to happen after other things,' the operative word 'after' having no meaning outside of time. So too might eoa be described as 'a thing which allows things to happen across other things.' The barbarians outside the Bastion might suppose the operative word 'across' to imply simultaneity, but the true Far Walkers understand simultaneity to be a fallacy. Eoa is the imperceptible fabric of which space and time both are illusory projections, and by which great distances of any and all kinds are surpassed by those who know the Way.

Doom Sayer: Though the Mirror Logician commands the forces of Destiny to provide safe passage, it is only by the Doom Sayer's constant battle against the wild forces of Fate that the party does not implode under the pressures of divine will. This art originates in the far corners of the world, where Fate constantly gnaws at the edges, seeking to consume the mortal plane upon which all true life depends. The wild-eyed, half-mad prophets calls Doom Sayers raise their voices into the winds and bellow their defiance at the impossible. At the edge of all things, they scream vertiginous truths into oblivion, forever contesting the mortal will to live against the Highest Powers which seek the end.

Portal Technician: By ancient tradition, every Far Walker is paired to a Portal Technician, and every Portal Technician to a Far Walker. It is for the Far Walker to blaze a trail through eoa, and for the Portal Technician to pave the way, that others may follow.

Did you just make "Action Hero" a DnD class? Because that's fantastic. Except for the Jingoism, which is jerkbuttness.

@Anansi
Also Good Lord Man what are the repercussions for singing new deities into existence?

It's difficult to say, because incidence causes the fragmentation of eoa in such a way as to render causal relationships within the 'affected period' incomprehensible.

Kind of like a combination of rpg Mountain King, Captain America, Uncle Sam, Chuck Norris, hulk and Warhammer Orkz.

The Mountain King though unaware of his titanic heritage is able channel his power into thunderclaps and stormbolts via a "spark" within them.

Or how in Dwarves in Ironforge Airfield get a power boost if you plant a flag near them.

Like Captain America a lot of the Patriot's feats don't make sense (Unknown to the patriot, his jingoism creates a pyschic field that increases his strength). There is no logical reason for Cap to beat the Hulk. In a way its kind of a jab at comics BS writing.

Like Uncle Sam from DC Comics, the Patriot draws upon the power of patriotism in his homeland.

Like Chuck Norris, the Patriot never runs out of bullets.

Similar to the Orkz of Warhammer 40k, The Patriot does not contemplate where his powers come from, because he "knows" that his country gives him powers. He has a psychic field that works similar to the waaagh. However this field runs on Jingoism, not group mentality.

If the Dream Crow tries to explain the way the universe of Anondo works and how his jingoism taps into the dreamrealm creating a psychic field, the Patriot merely shrugs it off as blasphemy or hogwash. The Patriot honestly believes that his country, tribe, or empire gives him special powers.

The Dream Crow or the Parasite can try to manipulate the Patriot by manipulating his emotions, thoughts and dreams to make him a more powerful fighter. However if the Patriots jingoism gets too high and he is aware of said manipulations, he can break from their control. Similar to how Hulk breaks from mind control via rage.

Runes

@Bullroarer, Cool mix of inspirations.

@Anansi, 'affected period'?

My stuff:

Setting: The Valterris Dominion in the World of Othran

The Valterris Dominion is a rough landscape full of volcanoes, swamps, rocky badlands, creepy gothic woods, frozen tundras (complete with a sunken, frozen, eldritch horror) and 'meat tree' forests. Constantly under assault by plaguewrought abominations, otherworldly scavengers, and worse.

It is inhabited by a collection of Sanferi ("Blood-Iron Elves"), Orcs, Humans, Draezen (Dragon people), Trolls, Spithran (Spider people), Ogres, Goblins, Graven (not-quite undead) and more.

The quest is to kill one of the "Crumulk", a sluglike coordinator of the Vulgrist, a collection of subterranean species waging war on the Dominion, and do as much damage to their tunnels as possible in the process.

1. Skull-Drummer
Role: Tank and Buffing (morale).
Background: Skull-drummer's originated amongst trolls but have spread to other members of the dominion, such as Orcs, Graven, and Charnel Banquet Ogres. Typically bearing a one handed weapon (usually a mace) and a large shield, some have come to eschew the shield and simply 'drum' by beating upon their own armor with their weapons or fists.

Regardless of whether they use a shield or their armor though, they are always adorned with at least one skull or an image of one (carved, painted, etc), which is beat rhythmically prior to, and during battle. They are often called "Skum" or "Skummers" initially this name was given by their enemies but it spread gradually to become common shorthand.

Skull-drummers control the tempo of battle, using war-shouts, vicious taunts, and cacophonous noise to bolster their allies and disrupt their enemies. In addition to the sheer noise they create, and their own brute strength, Skull-drummer's also 'feed' the skull upon their shield with the ambient energy from battle, allowing them to lash out against their foes with the stored magic, or draw in enemy spells.

Some skulldrummers even conjure a manifestation of their bloody tempo's at the height of battle, sending spectral warriors throughout the field, or single monstrous constructs.

Though they are often loud and unruly, Skulldrummers are a respected part of the Valterris military, ensuring every victory is a work of grisly art, and that the rank and file soldiers are too caught up in the thrill of battle to feel fear, doubt, or remorse.

(More to come, for the others.

Thoughts on this concept? I thought of 'headbangers' and brutal legend, and decided to run with a kind of warbard set up)

Inverted commas because periods of time and radii of space aren't as meaningful as most people think they are.

Nice, very 'bronze age' feel.

I like the Soldier-Citizen concept a lot.

They come from my novel's universe, which is set in a at the end of a Bronze Age era. But they are not from the civilization which is the focus of the book to avoid unintentional spoilers ^^ !

The Soldier-Citizens are the backbone of the armed forces of the Republic of Omre. There is a wide variety of them, here a Pathfinder. Also they tend to wear different kind of leather and bronze depending of where they come, and are also more or less skilled (citizens from the Northern and Eastern Senatiums and provinces are more skilled on average than those from the Southern and Western Senatiums, who faces a lot less dangers).

Three warrior characters for an "heroic" team made off characters of my Novel.

Akadil Eregondrvek (The Insane) of the Thunder-Singer : a massive berserk, wielding to one-handed bronze axes. He is incredibly strong and skilled, despite his raging madness in the heat of battle. Despite being a colossus even among the Kandari (2m60/ 8,5 feet), he is incredibly quick. He is one of the God-Warriors of the Kandari.

Turil Eradrava Madranvek (The Slayer of Kings) of the Silver Horns: Leather-worker and relatively small, he has tamed wild hulds and has a pack of five with him. He wield leather armour of good quality, but not really resilient, a small wooden shield, a short bronze knife and two spears which can be thrown at an opponent. He is the pathfinder in this group.

Unalak Erfedal (The Swift) of the Unbroken Soul tribe : the oldest of the God-Warriors, she is extremely talented with a sword and hand to hand combat. She is a charismatic leader, speaking various dialects of Kandari and the languages of the Ulgar, Xiongyue and Onguls human tribes. Despite her age, she is still the fastest of the three.

Runes

Next up for my setting

2. Torchbearer

Role: Hybrid, Anti-Magic Buffing, healing and damage

The Ardent Order of the Torchbearers are experts at absorbing magic cast by enemies and turning it into fuel for their own spells, empowering allies both through powerful, fiery spells, and through spirited rallying cries and intimidating displays of pure power.

Originally little more than banner bearers and performers, the Torchbearers have become a prominent fixture of the dominion with nigh-religious influence, walking both streets and battlefields with lanterns, candles, and massive torchstaves physical embodiments of the burning passions and pride of the dominion.

They first took to the battlefield in the Sanferi's ancient wars against the Draezen and their dragon overlords, drawing their flame away from the masses of soldiers and returning searing blasts in kind, but nowadays orcs, graven, and even draezen carry the symbol of the eternal might of the Dominion.
