Orb of Frost Showtunes

Which musical numbers, or musicals in general, are your favorites?

Of course, we have the classics like Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Super Star, Rent, and many many others...

But I sort of feel like it's gotta be Hello Dolly!

A Little Night Music was excellent, especially when Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones were doing it. Everyone loves The Pirates of Penzance. And, of course, if one wants a real classic, one must look no further than the traditional Hollywood picture Follow the Fleet.

One of the few musicals I've ever watched, and the only I've ever liked, is Sweeney Todd

Anyone who says Annie was a good show is gay. And not the normal, reasonable, homosexual kind of gay, but the obnoxiously pretentious "happy" kind of gay.

Orphans don't get Daddy Warbucks. Orphans get shit on, and any show where there's an obscenely happy ending is utter shit for giving kids that kind of unreasonable dream.

That said, Porgy and Bess is the boss.

I don't hate happiness, I hate excess. Just so happens that Annie's an excess of happiness. Ok...maybe I also hate "precocious children" driven stories...so sue me.

Find me a good broadway show that's a reasonable rebuttal and I'll change my mind.

Wow, that was an unexpected necro on Anansi's part.

I don't know if this counts, because it's only from a film musical that was originally an album, but I'm including it because I like it (even though I've posted it on SoL before this):

One of the few things I brought with me from my confirmation was an affection for Jesus Christ Superstar, the only musical aside from Grease that I can actually stand watching.

This number in particular is a feast for the ears.

What can I say? It's a song called "Dust and Ashes" from a musical based on a couple chapters from Tolstoy with a middle that's all about the hopeless triumph of bitterness and regret. How could I resist?

Because no one would enable my lazy non-googling patoot, I wikipedia'd showtunes.

Quote:
A show tune is a popular song originally written as part of the score of a “show” (or stage musical), especially if the piece in question has become a standard, more or less detached in most people's minds from the original context.[2] Particular musicals that have yielded “show tunes” include:
So, to my understanding, this would technically qualify?

I wasn't complaining.

I really need to read some Tolstoy at some point. I've read Dostoyevsky and Chekov, but never got to Tolstoy.

The musical episode from Buffy.
Not because of the quality (what can you expect from non-opera singers?) but because of the love and dedication that clearly went into it.
