Having seen princess sparkle and now watching the previous episodes, the foreshadowing for the alicorn thing is actually really well-done.
-It's established that dragons are extraordinarily rare, so Twilight's test in the cutie mark chronicles likely wasn't standard. Celestia was testing her for something specific.
-It then gets established that Twilight somehow had an alicorn princess assigned to foal-sit her even before the thing where she got her cutie-mark.
-Celestia and Luna actively give Twilight an important test in the Crystal Empire, one that emphasizes delegation over personal ability.

The third season, for as short as it was, wasn't as bad as some fans might make it out to be. Like, I think there were still lessons for Twilight to learn before she took on her responsibilities; the entire incident with Trixie and the Alicorn Amulet, for example, was about thinking outside of the box when confronted with someone stronger than you, and that would be an important thing to have as a ruler.

I was a bit annoyed with the most recent episode (Daring Don't), however. It seemed... oddly out of place for the series, made the Mane Six look pretty bad (they just stood there and gawked as Daring Do was attacked by three stallions, and Twilight said they were "in over their heads" when that's what USUALLY happens to them), and... really, Daring Do didn't need to be a real character. At all.

Still on season three ("Sleepless in ponyville"), so I'll have to reserve judgement. Actually, having read what the next new episode is going to be about kinda makes this one a bit of a tear-jerker.

But yeah, the alicorn duel one was definitely a good bit of characterization.

Will Rainbow Dash being in Wonderbolt Academy be an ongoing thing?
Crystal Empire was a neat addition. It's good to see more pony types. Actually, I'm wondering if Zebras are ponies. Zecora's magic seems to be compatible with Twilight's, and she has a cutie mark.
Also, full-blown horses from saddle-arabia. That was random.

Okay, finally caught up (except for that movie thing).

Honestly, I'm a bit with the nay-sayers on this one. Season three was pretty damn mediocre. Many episodes felt like they didn't contribute anything, like their problem came out of nowhere or they fell into the standard-cartoon-aesop-plot pitfall that earlier episodes tended to avoid (those still had the standard aesops, but at least their plots toward it weren't the standard ones). Actually, listing:

Episodes that were both good and added to the series:
-The Crystal Empire
-Magic Duel

Episodes that were decent enough, but didn't really leave an impact:
-One Bad Apple
-Sleepless in Ponyville

Episodes that had good concepts for adding to the 'verse, but ended up surprisingly mediocre:
-Too Many Pinkie
-Wonderbolt Academy
-Magical Mystery Cure
-Keep Calm and Flutter On

Episodes that fell into standard-cartoon-aesop-plot territory, making even my internal 8-year old girl groan:
-Just For Sidekicks
-Games Ponies Play (I actually couldn't sit through this one, so predictable it was)
-Apple Family Reunion

Episodes that just felt out of place:
-Spike at your service

Not sure how I feel about that one. On the one hand, the characterization of the mane six was indeed really out of place. I'm not even sure why they were in the plot after the beginning at all. Leave 'em out, and just do a Rainbow Dash solo episode.
Daring Do being a real character was also indeed a bit iffy, but I do appreciate the episode adding more of a sense of size and adventure to equestria. To often it started to feel like equestria was just five towns (canterlot, phillydelphia, ponyville, manehattan, cloudsdale) and the everfree forest.

I saw about twenty seconds from the middle of the movie, and the animation on the "humans" is just unnerving.

So... not gonna watch it.

I just felt that first bit, with the "Oh stop it you!" hand wave was PERFECT.

We are indeed a strange beast, but then again this is SoL, we're all pretty strange to be here in the first place!

After first seeing the trailer i was like:

Then one day i was bored and found it on ze Youtubes by accident and watched it. Turned slowly from "dafuq" to

because the movie kind of plays by the same rules as the tv show: humor (excellent gags), nice animation, a strong bond between the characters, even acknowledging that somewhere in the town there's an unseen counterpart to Twilight Sparkle...

aaaand that's about the nicest things i can say, because suddenly Twilight (no doubt influenced by a sudden case of human va'gina) goes into

and has to reassemble the alternate universe Mane Six in a matter of minutes. It's like they forgot that they have much, MUCH more time in a movie and just wrote a long episode. With songs. And a villain.

Which, by the end, gets taken down by the all-time downside of FIM - just like in the Pokemon world Pokemon do EVERYTHING (from being food to delivering food to sexual missconduct and creating the universe), the Friendship magic solves all conflict. Just like that everything is solved, everyone forgives the evil tyrant who just laid waste unto Humanville and zero fucks were given about the fact that our lord and saviour Twilight Sparkle usually walks around unclothed and on hoofs.

All in all it's a typical FIM-episode with the same great writing until the end. Seeing the alternate pony-humans is kind of nice but since they're not the same characters it's hard to feel anything but ... well...

remember how i don't give a shit about AU Draenei? Same difference. But at least Rainbow Dash is cool and Best Pony Ever gets a short cameo.

In short if you like FIM look it up on Youtube, it's not offensively bad but i doubt it's going to have any longlasting effects on the show's plot - if it get's mentioned at all, that is. If you like the show you will like this.

In that case, I shall check it out.

Real dedication to the pictures there

Edit: Wait, cute guy alert? In this show? Hrm, that seems kind of out of place.

Yepp. It kind of is.

He's a human, btw. Or whatever those colorful bastards are supposed to be. Sooo it's not just romance in a kids movie, it's interspecies-interdimensional romance. In a kids movie. Hot damn.

Oh, come on, they have like two male pony models. The kids are supposed to think he's just another palace guard. Backfired by giving him a voice actor, though.

Just watched 'flight to finish'. Pretty damn strong episode. I actually was kinda expecting Scootaloo to get her scootering cutie-mark by that racing thing at the end.
