So Tong means "keg"? That's actually pretty neat.

And since it's the topic, let's take a closer look at Lok'tar ogar and its implications:

Since 'Lok'tar' is being used as a greeting, we can be pretty sure it means victory. Which leaves us with two words for 'ogar'. Let's say the o stands for or, leaving us with 'gar' fo death.

Gar. Garrosh. Heart of Death.

Considering how many words the orcs have that start with lok followed by an apostrophe, I think that the orcs don't have a word for victory. Not in the way we do, that is. It seems like a union of two words, which together, have the same meaning as our single word "victory".

Yeah, 'Lok'tar' is most likely something akin to successful battle.

: Actually that sounds plausible. Orcs didn't know war until they came to Azeroth, did they? Their biggest problem was the bickering of clans for god knows how long. So, after they arrived on Azeroth, they actually had to find a word for drawn out, constant battles. And since people died everywhere they had toacknowledge that war = death.

Although that doesn't explain why Garrosh got the name Heart of War on Draenor.

Unless... (now this gets even more head canon-y)

Grom wasn't the one naming his son. Perhaps he didn't even know of his existence. His mother gave him his original name, which was Garosh, (insert reasons like resent) but after experiencing war on Azeroth, he simply added another r to his name.

Given that the orcs' written language is pictographic (runes) I'd say "lok" probably has several meanings depending on what's paired with it. "Lok" by itself doesn't have a literal translation, I don't think, but tends to contextualize success or an urge to succeed. Or in some cases, a sense of honorable accomplishment. There's also some implication it can mean "song" or "glory" or similar mark of praise and remembrance in orc culture.

"Lok-Narash" = "Arm yourselves"
"Lok-Regar" = "Ready for orders"
"Lok'tar!" = "Victory!"
"Lok'tar ogar" = "Victory or death"
"Lok'amon" = Traditional orcish song sung about starting a family.
"Lok'tra" = Traditional orcish song sung about a battle.
"Lok'vadnod" = Traditional orcish song sung about the life of a hero.

Every instance has a clear tone tone of some great success, but I can't conjure a specific word that fits it perfectly.

I've always tried to give my toons suitable racial names. I also like to play things that I feel are suitable with the lore as race/class combinations. Heres a list of my toon names. Some have more effort in them than others, some have direct obvious meanings behind them others on the other hand are complex formations of 3 or 4 different meanings.

Alliance
Tailos - Nightelven Druid
Erzsebeta - Worgen Deathknight
Parwin - Human Paladin
Vonhimmel - Worgen Warrior
Woaden - Dwarf Hunter
Ravina - Nightelf Rogue
Serenis - Draenei Priest
Fizzletwiz - Gnome Mage
Shumai - Pandaren Shaman

Horde
Hargow - Pandaren Monk
Lilithia - Bloodelf Warlock
Sonneillon - Forsaken Rogue
Zulzahn -Troll Shaman
Lucillia - Undead Deathknight
Grizack - Goblin Mage
Thokgal - Orc Warrior
Nakoda - Tauren Hunter
Zinzee - Troll Druid

Kinda bummed I'm likely never going to find the perfect race to be my Alliance side Monk/Warlock or Horde side Paladin/Priest. I suppose if we get Naga for either side I could fill the Priest/Warlock side or things, the missing Paladin and Monk are the two that I think will bother me the most down the road. I still have a hard time getting into Sunwalkers and Bloodknights. I also cannot tolerate Monks of the other races currently, I suppose I can possibly accept it down the road once they are more established, the execution of that class lore was absolutely hideous.

Maybe they use "Lok" like the Smurfs use "Smurf".

Two of my Draenei have Eastern European names, inspired by the likes of Exarch Menelaos, Exarch Admetius, and Messenger Hermesius, etc. My Draenei Paladin is named Brutus, and my Draenei Mage is named Arcadius.

While not entirely consistent with this naming pattern, I also have a Draenei priest named Marjut, which is Finnish, just because I liked that name for Draenei.

Hmm, I'm sure I made a post about this at some point,

My forum spelunking brought up this when the leader stories were coming out

But that leaves Garr which supposedly means War however Lok'tar Ogar means "Victory or death" while it's very possible that Gar and Garr are two different words I just don't think so. All in all Heart of War sounds cool and totally sounds like something Grom would name his kid so I guess that's all that is needed.
Even then with Orc naming traditions (Rend and Maim, Bladefist, Deadeye etc.) that are in english, it's fair to assume that when translated the Orcish first names are just as dangerous sounding so 'Heart of War/Death' Hellscream may just be par for the course, especially when the guy naming you has been characterised as more than a touch off his goddamned rocker.

My Wildhammer is Seastace Highcrest.

(combination of "Eustace" and "Seamus" - so it's pronounced shay-stus)

I like you. You get +100 cool points.

You do not know the awesome sauce of Gisella Hornslager? She is awesome beyond belief.

Not only is she a bounty hunter, and thus the only name for every single female dwarf hunter I have ever made... except on the main server I use and I'm hoping to take the name back when the big non-active name clean up proceeds. Currently she is Jaegerbrew, but she was also a fashionista, had a human lackey named Woodrow, and traveled in a caravan that was filled with all sort of wonderful things and knew what she wanted and would do whatever it took to get it.

Basically is summed up with this quote. "Gisella Hornslager doesn't bow, scrape, or take orders, especially from somebody whose eyebrows meet in the middle. Now you can either change your tone with me or turn around and trot back to town."

Heh, I can give you some nice sounding and fitting Slavic names. You can then confuse various eastern nationals , I find that delightfully hipster for some reason.

Apsida (Viper) it's really unique and hipsterish, it means viper but also a nasty kind of woman, poisonous, mean
Senka (Shadow)
Vestica (Witch)
Rana (Wound)
Sida (AIDS) if you feel like trolling

I reckon all of these will be taken so some exotic letters will be called for.

We call it Sida too.

Rana is a toad, though.

Vestica sounds neat, by the way.

Yeah that is the issue with using diseases, they tend to have the same name across different languages. I think Sida is French in origin for example. Mostly it's the common diseases that have old timey names.
Kuga is a nice one I thought of, it means plague but it feels more like an orcish name to me. Same with Zaraza, not-human-fitting, though Bolest is nice, kinda like Celeste but not (both mean disease btw).

Oh and it's actually Aspida not Apsida, I misspelled but it doesn't matter much since it's not one of your favourites.

Thought of a few more:

Ubistvena (Murderous, female form, sounds quite Slavic imo, if read as Ubi-Stvena)
Crvena (Red-one, female form, bonus points: when read in English it sounds kinda like bloody-one)
Sekira (Axe)
Ledena (Cool name, means Icy-one (female form), but not sure how I like it in English)

Anyway, this is very fun. If anyone wants some names for another class or race even if you don't necessarily plan to use them I'd love to make them
