The place was completely empty. Or so we thought, after about 5 minutes of searching for clues, guardsmen flooded the place. Behind them followed the Guard Captain, the Manbat, and... Benjamin. We'd been betrayed, but it all made sense now...

The ensuing fight was a massacre...

Loot Bag

Freewinter stared at his hands. "Nothing. The place was empty. We spent some time looking for any leads before the guards came."

"The guards knew you would be there."

"Yeah. We found out how, too. As the Watch assembled, my cousin Ben walked in with Captain Lorden, a high profile ally of the Manbat that we had found out about."

"Your cousin betrayed you."

"Now that I think of it, it must have been him that tipped off the guard before, too."

"Hmm." The interviewer wrote a few lines. "What happened next?"

"They attacked. They were trying to kill us this time. No holds barred. Heh! Well, I can't say that we were any nicer. Me with my four daggers, Thornby...well, Thornby. I'd say we were pretty evenly matched. I went for Ben first. He didn't see it coming, went right down. Captain Lorden just stood in back and shouted orders. Thornby and I killed a bunch of his soldiers before it was over, but then the Manbat appeared. He smashed through a window and kicked Thornby in the chest before he even hit the ground. They both went down." Freewinter paused.

The old clock ticked patiently in the silence that followed. Eventually the scribe said "Yes?"

"That's when I ran."

"You saw Manbat and panicked."

"Yeah."

"I see. And I can assume from what information that we have already assembled that it was during your flight that you happened upon Lord Aliden's carriage outside a brothel, at which time you killed him and his escort."

"Fuck, I mean I...I just didn't want it all to be for nothing, you know?"

"Would you say that anything noteworthy happened to you on your journey back to Southshore?"

I was approached by a Dark Iron dwarf. Said his name was "Curnrist." Said his entourage had been killed and he needed an armed escort on his trip to Southshore. Something didn't seem quite right about him. Gave off some dark, if slightly idiotic, vibes.

Loot Bag

"As it happens, yeah. I met this Dark Iron man. Odd fellow. Something felt wrong about him. Dressed in the strangest robes I'd ever seen. Couldn't really see his face under his big hood. He told me that his bodyguards had been killed by Trolls and that he needed an escort to Southshore. I didn't really know where to go at the time, so...I agreed to accompany him. He seemed like a friendly enough person, if a bit...off."

"What was his name?"

"He called himself Curnrist."

"I see." The interviewer wrote a single sentence on the paper. "And you reached Southshore without incident?"

"Yeah. The Dwarf thanked me and gave me a pouch of gold. I took it and...headed for the tavern. I tried my hardest to drink myself to death. Everything's just...fallen apart, you know? Rebecca's dead, I'm kill-on-sight in six Kingdoms, the Manbat's probably after me now. I just...." He trailed off.

"I understand. And that was how we found you," the interviewer said in a kindly voice. "One more question, if you feel up to it. How did you find the bar where you were ambushed by the Manbat at the end?"

"There was this sergeant of the Watch that we found. We got him to tell us that Captain Lorden would sometimes meet with Manbat in the cellar there."

"What did you do with this man?"

"Slit his throat and dumped him in the sewer."

"I see. Thank you, Mr Freewinter. You have been most helpful." The interviewer carefully packed his files back into his briefcase and placed the inkpot and pen into their respective pockets. He stood up and dusted off his coat. "Someone will be along to assist you in just a moment. Good day, Mr Freewinter."

Daniel gave an unhappy nod.

The interviewer unlocked the door and stepped out into the hallway beyond. He nodded at the person waiting there as he closed the door behind him. "I believe that is as much as we're going to get out of this one."

"Anything good?"

"Some. Not as much as we might have wished. Captain Thomas Thornby remains an unknown quantity. Nevertheless, we have a clearer understanding of who face."

"Good."

"Well. I suppose you know what you must do."

"I do."

"Very well. A pity. I believe that he was a genuinely good man." The scribe sighed. "But too dangerous, yes, far too dangerous to persist. I shall leave you to it." He walked away down the long corridor. The other figure waited until he turned a corner before opening the door and stepping through.

As the door clicked shut, Daniel Freewinter looked up with a glum expression. Shock, joy, uncertainty, fear and resignation passed across his features.

"I...see. That...fuck, I guess that explains a few things, doesn't it? But I still don't understand."

"I'm afraid you never will, Daniel," said Rebecca Mistmantle.

"No. No, I guess not." Freewinter gave a sick groan. "Fine. That's...fine. For the love I bear you, make it quick."

"I will." Rebecca stepped forward.

The old grandfather clock counted four seconds and then Daniel Freewinter was dead.

Now let's see if you can figure out what's going on before the next installment.

Come on, try harder. Daniel's dead. He was a thief who got mixed up in things bigger and scarier than he could handle. Same with Durin.

But who do you think Thornby is? What's the Manbat's game? Whose side is Rebecca on? What's Curnrist doing? Who was the boss?

Think, people! The clues are there!

Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon

General Hath orders Rebecca to dump the body.

Thornby knew of Gilneas and Alterac's plan, and he couldn't leave Hillsbrad or Alterac with that knowledge.

Thornby heads for Dun Garok.

I'm assuming that this is around the 1st war erra.
