Okay, I have an update.

So about... a day after my last post, the problem stopped. I chalked it up to my computer acting screwy thanks to the Win10 offer coming to an end, and my fervent ignoring of that shit. Then, last... Thursday, it started up again; it turns on, then turns right back off, and makes a small, electrical noise. It did that 3-4 times, then came on. Friday, it was 5-6 times. When I tested Saturday, I kept the computer off, and just turned the monitor on; it took about a minute.

Having looked into it, I've discovered that the likely cause is that a capacitor in the monitor is starting to go, which... is not great for me. I can't really afford to get a new monitor at the moment, and I'm about as tech savvy as a drunken squirrel, so fixing it myself is out.

Kinda sucks.

Thanks, I hate it when they do little updates like that without at least a popup to go "Here's what this is!"

Just had a little scare where the computer seemed stuck in a restart loop, I think restarting it without the old battery which no longer holds a charge fixed it, but does anyone else have any advice?

Places to take it to get it a check-up so to speak, or other things to do to check if any of its components might be going bad?

Last time i had an infinite restart loop it turned out to be a broken RAM Bar. Might wanna run a diagnosis tool on those fuckers. Might also be the power unit. No idea how to check that one other than installing a different one and see what happens.

Looks like I'll have to drop by Bestbuy or something later this week then.

Einstein's famous quote about insanity has no meaning in this age of digital technology, where repeatedly trying the same thing does, in fact, sometimes, eventually yield different results.

I built this rig back in 2014 and got myself an r9 290, and I remember having an issue very similar to this but have no idea how to fix it now that it's reared its ugly head again.

Basically, when doing even light web browsing (to say nothing of gaming) with the temperature around 60 degrees, my display will simply shut off without warning or provocation. Sometimes, but not rarely, the fans will suddenly start blowing at maximum speed even though the temp is only in the 60's. However, I CAN play games with the temperatures higher, or the fans going at much faster speeds (say, around 75 degrees and 80% speed) without issue... but the card will still turn off without provocation. More annoyingly however, is that it turns off when practically idle, when I'm browsing the web, not even watching videos and with an adblocker on!

For years I didn't have this issue, and the catalyst software on its base settings (I don't bother overclocking) could handle modern, intensive games like Dragon Age Inquisition at 60FPS and 1080 with no issue. However, the other day I finished playing a very graphically light game- Pillars of Eternity, and AFTER I shut the game down, this problem reoccurred.

Right now I'm typing this from my computer's safe mode, and I don't have this issue when I uninstall the driver with DDU... so I'm guessing this is a very ugly driver issue. I actually thought I was having a PSU issue so I went out and bought myself a brand new Corsair CX750M and installed it today with no issues, but the problem persists.

Can anyone be of any help? I'm literally at my wits' end.

Specs:

Powercolor r9 290 GPU

Corsair CX750M PSU

MSI B85M-P33 LGA1150 Mobo

Crucial CT120M500 SSD1

PNY CS1311 SSD 2

Hitachi HDP7560 HD

When you say "The Display turns off" do you mean the Display Driver, the card, your monitor or the entire PC? I don't think i can be of much help but it might help to clarify that one.

Also: have you tried looking for the next-to-last driver for your card? Might be it auto-updated a faulty driver; happened to me once. I got an... Jebus, what is that thing, an R9 290? I think? Something with 4 GB, extra fans and Vapor in the name. But, yeah, it shoddied my PC and i had to reinstall Windows because it fucked up my registry and rights and all. (We think my PC had an issue during installing the driver but we never really found out exactly what it was, just that reinstalling fixed it.)

First step for diagnosis is, last time you fixed this was it a change-out of hardware or software? Seems like it's a software thing from what you're describing.

PoE is graphically light, but it may be that it's calling on certain legacy settings that are screwing things up too. I know when I played it, my computer had more issues doing multi-window work than when playing WoW or Witcher 3.

If it's also happening to you while doing web surfing again, is there any commonality between content? Flash player/java or loading certain pages with large numbers of certain ad types? Streaming? Older sites vs. newer ones?

Fucking infuriating is putting it mildly.

Drivers are upto date, this wasn't an issue in the past, no idea what Blizz have done to Hots code.
This problem hasn't gone away, it's incredibly frustrating.

I've had weeks without an issue, then get this crash first game in.

Does it crash with other games or just HotS?

Non that I can think of, I'm open to suggestions.

Occurs during games only, hasn't happened on the Menu screens as of yet.

Literally nothing else other than Battle.net client (which as I mentioned, totally bricks itself after one of these crashes, goes see-through and needs to be Exited via tray to open again and get working correctly) and my security software (which given it's Kaspersky I can't imagine causing this sort of issue)

Downgrading to the last driver and resetting my BIOS to factory defaults seems to have fixed the issue. At least I didn't buy a really expensive PSU, and I have a good one for when I upgrade my card next.

Fullscreen.
If it's solely related to the game, now you need to do some small adjustments and data gatherijng. First, try lowering your graphics settings. Even in uber rigs, games that aren't properly optimized can be far more taxing than you'd think. Also, do a quick check to make sure ALL drivers are updated or rolled back to an optimal state (even sound). Just like Oma, sometimes a driver shoved out isn't good for all products and hardware.

Next, pull up task master and switch window style to windowed or borderless (you want quick access to the TM). Over the course of games, when you get 10/15 seconds between deaths, flip between the game and TM and check to see that RAM is being released, your CPU isn't being excessively taxed, whether it's issues with your internet, etc.

More than likely, this is a graphics issue, but if not then you have a quick way to see where one of the problems potentially sits.
