I think this is somewhat offensive to the real victims of terrorist attacks.

Yes, I agree.

A company defending their intellectual property is comparable to the mass murder of innocents because people would rather believe in their magical pixie book than the real world.

Well, given the entitlement is far more important than the morals, law or even life these days, it is hardly surprising.

Some people are rather angry that Blizzard has taken down one rather large private server.

Yeah comparing this to terrorism is silly

Nostalrius was a popular Vanilla private server with around 800,000 registered accounts. Blizzard shut it down.

Afaik, "famous" streamers also mentioned it in their streams, so...

Anyway, Blizzard is in the right, and that's that.

Half and half I think. Their argument that "Vanilla servers would be barely played" after this seems pretty laughable. Last we knew, wow was down to 5-6 million? Nost almost had a fifth of that and it wasn't exactly easy to hear about them until recently (Streamers etc).

It also saddens me to think vanilla just got that much harder to play. I get that they're defending their IP and they have every right too but the idea of that experience going away forever is really saddening. I really wish preservation of video-gaming history mattered to more people.

Bummer for the people enjoying playing on that server and all, but Blizzard had every right to do what they did.

Basically yeah.

Though there is a conspiracy going that Nostalius was a Blizzard operated massive field test of "how good of an idea are legacy servers." The whole hullabaloo is very fun to read about.

And I'd be bold enough to say that real legacy servers would get Blizzard even more players than Nost had. Just about every serious private player is willing to pay to get Blizz quality past experience. I could see 2mil joining for legacy servers.

When their current number is like 5mil or less they really should not turn away from that much money. Especially when they need minimal investment to get it going.

Screw private servers. They are only "OK" when a bunch of Navy cadets and officers play on non-internet based servers to pass the time on their ships. Anyone else, who has internet access, shouldn't be at all surprised when a stupid private server gets trashed.

That time when we had our server in middle school and everyone was either an orc or night elf. Good times.

Well, Blizzard pretty much created theses servers themselves by not doing legacy servers for all the shit they removed from their game, which is an aweful lot.

How far are we allowed to take this logic

Can I make a private server that runs the WotLK pre-patch because I liked how ret paladins were then? It's Blizzard's fault for not buffing ret!

Well yeah but isn't the entire point in having people to play with? If you can find that many people that agreed with rerolling on another server simply because of that change then its probably something Blizzard should be addressing.

I think everyone here seems to be split on whether most people were playing on that server because it was free or because they missed the community feel Wow used to have. Based on the mass protesting and how many screenshots have emerged of them actually behaving as a community, i'm inclined to believe it's the latter.

Blizzard won't sell me the product I want, so I go elsewhere for it.

People actually communicate with each other there. There's world PvP out the ass. Stranglethorn Vale is one big game of team deathmatch. I remember passing by in the early early days and Nesingwary's Camp was carpeted with player skeletons. Hillsbrad has near-constant skirmishes going on between groups of players actually working together.

We were only month away from AQ dropping. Event, gong, everything. Fuck, when BWL was released the Burning Steppes was one massive battleground between dozens of raid groups.

This is what the world boss spawns looked like when the Nightmare Dragons got released:

Old AV

I had more fun in the last three months than I did in the entirety of Cataclysm.

And now I have until Sunday.

I allegedly went on a private server once that gave everyone GM powers which was like WoW with Skyrim-like console commands. It was neat but everybody crashed the servers every five minutes. Anyways Blizzard should make a cheat code realm too.
