Default The WarMaHordes Thread.

So after 15 years of being into Warhammer lore I finally started playing ... Warmachine.

It's a cheaper game than Warhammer. Better designed. Better balanced. Not to mention incredibly fun. I played a few games of Cryx with some friends, and I was hooked.

Have begun a 15 point Convergence of Cyriss force as my first army. Thinking of having them done in an egyptian-esque colour scheme.

Anyone else playing?

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.

No one ever said elves are nice.

Nah, I only check out the PP miniatures collection from time to time. Some of 'em look cool. Are the minis poseable? They look like they're snap-fit.

Edit:
I see... You use those little portals just like I once did.

I don't play but I think the story is neat, especially Everblight.

You seemed so proud about it, that I never wanted to point out that I'd been doing it forever.

Now schhh... Let it be our little secret.

The firing range of that army is... Frustrating. At least when you're on the other side.

That being said, I've yet to lose against them. Deneghra's feat saved me, every single game.

I'm highly considering getting into it. Being in the UK there's a GW in every town, but I found out there's a local group who play it quite a bit and is relatively local.

Now they're releasing "All-In-One" boxes that include (mostly) competitive models and a mini rulebook and for the price it's actually a pretty full-ish army you can put down on the tabletop and play, unlike GW's which still cost upwards of a 100 or more and will probably require more models to even make it legal at 500 points.

Glory to Menoth.

So with Warhammer Fantasy going to pieces I decided to pick up this.

35pts worth of a competitive army (so about 1500 points?) for 80 as opposed to 120 for about a 300pt non-legal Fantasy or 40k box that probably has subpar competitive models in the box.

Anybody else taking it up?

Glory to Menoth.

I've heard of Warmachine some years ago, but I've never delved into it. Maybe I'll go into it, since it is cheaper and require less figurines than GW games.

Yeah, the models themselves are slightly cheaper than GW. They're still pricey, but that you need FAR, FAR, less than GW makes it much cheaper in the short-term from what I can tell.

I also like that the lore actually ADVANCES and with regularity.

Which faction were you thinking of picking up?

I don't know. Khador or Cygnar, probably. Menoth are far too fanatical for me, i don't like necromantic factions and neither Scyrah and Cyrixx appeal me.

Er, I know the range of plastics is more limited than GW. Not sure on the pose front? I think the Warjacks are at least somewhat.

I didn't really like the quality of the Warmachines/Hordes tbh.

I'm really torn between Cygnar and Khador. Could someone tell me how WarMa is played and how the two factions differs from one another ?

After having the last two GW Finecrap models I bought be half-ruined by mold lines/bubbles I'm not going to argue GW as being any better. I was somebody who was bored of metal by the time Finecrap started being introduced but needless to say I'm pleased with Warmhordes' range being mostly metal.

Warmachine has a lot more of a melee focus to it. There's none of this "I take out a quarter of your men from across the table on turn one." I say that because it helps here.

Cygnar is generally considered the 'ranged' faction, but due to Warmahordes nature, it means that they're still going to get stuck into melee combat eventually. They're a glass cannon faction and also have the widest range of Mercenaries available to them. There are builds that work with more melee units though like the Sword Knights.

Khador are about elite troops with high defence stats, contrary to the "Red Wave" nature the background hints at since Cryx already has the 'expendable' trope down. They have the least number of Warjacks to field, but they are built to last in lore and thus tough on the tabletop. They're a good faction if you want to focus on your infantry units, especially since the Winter Guard build is now very, very popular from what people tell me.

Lorewise, Cygnar are very much the Alliance. Warmachine has a lot of grey versus grey in its lore, but they're generally the most upstanding bunch ("when Han Solo is the most evil member of your party you are the good guys.") They have the only all-volunteer army, their heroes are generally between the Good and Lawful spectrum. Cygnar is the largest kingdom but because it's slap bang in the middle of everybody they tend to be fighting off threats on all sides.

Khador are - surprise, surprise - from the north, which tends to be a cold, harsh, shitty place to live but it also makes their people extremely rugged and tough since only the stronggeesstt wiilll surrvvivveee. To go with the Russian theme, they have a big imperialist streak; all men have to serve in the military, most women volunteer anyway, fighting for your nation is basically the greatest thing you can do. They're not evil, but they're not good, and their characters range from Not-Irwin Rommel (decent guy who his men and enemies respect) to state-approved Kharne the Betrayer.

Picked up a bunch of their books at the local Half-Price books, pretty damn cheap. Looks interesting, but no one in my area plays it.

That used to be the case here, especially with Games Workshop being so prevalent in the UK but I've noticed a very big surge in popularity in the last year to the point that the local GW's have almost no new blood in them at all and even they are thinning out to go to the various LFGS'. Quite a few tournaments help as well.

Yeah, don't have anything like that around here. So I'll just stick with the books for now.

Well, it will be Khador for me then. I've read on a site some background to their units, and I like them a lot : a backwater country surging to power. Plus their monarch is kinda hot.

Which Warcaster were you eyeing up playing?
